There is a fantastic new application from Transport Ireland called Journey Planner. There are free iPhone, Android and web based applications. I am using the web based application to teach the pupils about transport and travel. The curricular topics covered are Numeracy, Literacy, Geography, Science and SPHE.
For numeracy we discussed timetables, calendars, distances travelled and cost of the journey (this part of the web page is not yet active). Pupils discussed and solved the real-time problems in groups. By using the computer room pupils had access to their own computers.
Of course pupils have access to maps of Ireland and town plans as well using the application which are great for geography.
We were able to discuss how people are able to use public transport to travel and how this is good for the environment. This ties in nicely with the fourth Green Schools Theme of Travel.
This a free resource and allows teachers and pupils to have real-time access to real-time numeracy problems.
