This year’s Scratch Competition launched last month, to coincide with EU Code Week. Run by the ICS Foundation and supported by Lero – the Irish Software Research Centre, Amazon Web Services and Science Fountation Ireland, the Scratch Competition promotes computing and software development at both primary and secondary school levels.
Scratch is a visual programming language that encourages children to develop essential coding skills through fun and interactive learning. It challenges students to create stories, games and animations using software. It encourages innovation and creativity while giving them a taste of possible future careers in the IT sector.
Scratch is used in more than 150 different countries and available in more than 40 languages!
Schools all over Ireland are now invited to register and take part in this year’s competition. Teachers and entrants may avail of free downloads, including dozens of download lesson plans, workbooks and other resources for teaching and learning Scratch in the classroom. All participants receive a Scratch completion cert with the top scoring projects going through to a grand final, taking place during Tech Week 2019, where the overall national winners will be announced.
The closing date for receipt of Scratch projects is Friday 22nd February 2019. The Scratch National Final will take place during Tech Week 2019 (11th – 17th May).
