The Dream Space Ambassador Program is a flagship Dream Space Student Leadership and training program, supported by the Dream Space Team in Dublin and Belfast. The programme is designed to encourage students who have an interest in coding & all things digital to learn new skills, work as a team & share what they’ve learned with their peers, students & teachers.
As it nears the end of this years Dream Space Ambassadors journey, I have been reflecting on the benefit of the programme for students.
This year, I have been assisting 10 transition year students in engaging in the Dream Space Ambassador programme. The students engaged in multiple virtual training sessions with the Dream Space team to develop their coding skills & have gained the confidence to teach their peers & other students what they have learned.
The programme gives students the chance to enhance their leadership & 21st century skills.
The highlights for the students have been learning to code Microbit & designing their own arcade games using MakeCode. They are looking forward to their upcoming Python training session! The students enjoyed these virtual training sessions so much, they were eager to share what they learned with the wider school community.
Throughout the year the transition year students have shared their skills by holding Safer Internet Day activities, teaching coding to the Junior Cycle classes & assisting teachers in coding this gave them more confidence in their coding skills & has benefitted the STEM education throughout the school.
The Dream Space Ambassadors thrived on sharing their knowledge with Junior Cycle students, so we organised a session with primary school students. The transition year students held an hour session with 5th class students, it was their first time to experience coding & it was a great success.
At the end of each academic year, Dream Space proudly host a graduation day to celebrate the outstanding work of our Dream Space Ambassadors. This gives the students a space to present the work they completed as Dream Space Ambassadors throughout the year.
This programme is definitely worth while & can be completed by both primary & secondary level students. It is one to watch out for in the next academic year!!
