On the 24th of April Census 2016 will take place in every household throughout the country. “The census is a key source of information for everyone in our country. It provides information in relation to who we are, what we do and how we live our daily lives. This in turn provides the knowledge that we all need to make decisions and plan for the future.” The Central Statistics Office [CSO] has created lessons plans for First & Second classes, Third & Fourth classes and Fifth & Sixth Classes. In the lesson plans there are some fantastic and easy ideas for pupils to learn about data. While doing so they can store data using spreadsheets and then create graphs of all sorts that they can analyse. They can then use presentation software to present their findings. These lesson plans give primary school pupils opportunities to use I.C.T. tools, learn about the Census, improve their mathematical skills and perfect their presentation skills!
As part of your geography lessons you can explore the fantastic SAPMAPs for the Census 2011. You can explore town lands, electoral areas and many others items. Pupils can even search for their own house!
If you want to have them explore their family history then look no further that the 1901 and the 1911 censuses. The 1901 and 1911 censuses are the only surviving full censuses of Ireland open to the public. Both censuses cover the island of Ireland.
