Engaging children in the writing process can be a challenge, especially when they struggle to find inspiration or lack confidence in their ideas. One powerful method to spark interest and creativity is by providing a stimulating starting point—whether that’s an image, video, or intriguing question. Stimuli help to unlock imagination, make abstract concepts tangible and invite students into a world of possibilities where their ideas are valid and valued. In the digital age, a variety of online resources offer high-quality, accessible materials designed specifically to inspire young writers. Three platforms I use extensively are The Literacy Shed, Once Upon a Picture, and Pobble 365.
The Literacy Shed
The Literacy Shed contains a range of short films and visual storytelling prompts designed to capture the attention of learners. The site organises its content into thematic “sheds,” such as Fantasy, Mystery, and Adventure, each filled with videos that can serve as a narrative springboard. For example, showing the short film The Alchemist’s Letter from the Fantasy Shed can lead to discussions about memory, legacy, and invention—rich themes for personal or fictional writing. Teachers can use the videos to develop vocabulary, explore story structure, and inspire descriptive writing. Many of the videos are also suitable for EAL learners, as many videos use limited language and rely on inferences based around the visuals presented.

Once Upon a Picture
Once Upon a Picture offers a collection of thought-provoking images accompanied by discussion questions. These visuals are intentionally open-ended, sparking curiosity and inviting interpretation. An image of a mysterious floating house, for instance, might lead to questions like “Who lives there?” or “How did it get there?” prompting children to construct narratives or develop persuasive pieces. The images work well as standalone writing prompts or as part of a wider lesson on inference and creativity. The provision of a wide variety of prompt questions also helps the teacher plan effectively and pivot based on pupil respinses and engagement.

Pobble 365
Pobble 365 provides a new image-based writing prompt every day of the year. Each post includes an image, a story starter, and a variety of activities such as sentence challenges and grammar exercises. A picture of a lone explorer in an icy landscape might be paired with a narrative introduction, encouraging students to continue the story or write from a different perspective. The daily format keeps content fresh and can be easily integrated into morning routines or literacy stations.

By incorporating digital stimuli from these platforms, teachers can provide rich, engaging entry points into writing that ignite imagination and promote deeper thinking. When children are given inspiring materials, writing becomes more than a task—it becomes a creative journey.
