AI Literacy Support: Google’s “Read Along”

In today’s digital age, technology can be a powerful tool to enhance learning. We have seen that through many applications and features. However, Google’s “Read Along” feature offers a unique and engaging way to boost literacy and comprehension skills for students. Powered by artificial intelligence (AI), the reading tutor provides real-time feedback as students read aloud, highlighting words and offering pronunciation guidance in a student friendly manner. This support can help build confidence and improve fluency as students progress through their reading.

The “Read Along” platform offers various types of books – some curriculum based and others based on stories, fairy tales, numbers, animals, etc. The books are relatively short and are divided into different levels of difficulty – Level 1 stories, Level 2 stories, etc.

As students read aloud their selected book, the application highlights the current word and provides audio cues if the student mispronounces the word. The interface is very friendly and has a supportive virtual character named “Diya” who encourages students to read.

Once students have completed their book, the application will recommend further reading based on their ability levels. In this way, artificial intelligence identifies words that students struggle with, and words that they are more confident in. This allows the experience to become more personalized as the application adjusts the difficulty and provides appropriate support.

Integrating “Read Along” into Google Classroom:

“Read Along” can be integrated into Google Classroom via the Assignment tab. The teacher can assign a specific book for the entire class to read independently, either in school or at home. Once set as an assignment, Read Aloud provides individualized feedback based on a students literacy performance through the selected book. The report shows accuracy of words pronounced independently, supported words, comprehension questions (if asked throughout the book) and words the student may need extra support on.

“Read Along” can be integrated into literacy programmes, such as DEIS literacy targets, etc. It can also be used for special education support classes, to support students with dyslexia or to generate a greater interest in reading the classrooms.

“Read Along” has the potential to be a valuable asset in supporting the literacy development of students. By embracing this innovative technology, teachers can create a more engaging and effective learning environment for all.
