The activity pack is excellent for the younger kids. One way you can subconsciously communicate distance of the planets is by placing the ‘nearby’ planets hoops closer together (Mercury, Venus and Mars), and the giant planets hoops further away (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune). So our nearest neighbours are a hop, and our furthest are a sprint.Hello Ashling,
Welcome to the forum, the man on the moon is a great introduction into the stories we share about the moon and its cultural significance. Ask the children to share what they see when they look at the moon. Great activity, a longer project is great for learning about documenting and observation. Designing their own planets is a great activity. One thing you could do is explain the sun as a source of heat and ask them where their new planet goes in the order of current planets. How warm would their planet be? What kind of clothes would they have to wear ?Hello Aine,

Such a nice use of non-standard measurement here, using cubes or footsteps to measure shadows is perfect for Junior Infants to compare sizes before they’re ready for rulers.Hi Elaine,
This a great practical for First Class. Predicting the areas that will be warmest and coolest and then letting them investigate is great inquiry based learning. You could place different materials outside (like metal, wood, and fabric) to see which heats up the most in the sun, or turn it around and ask the children how they might cool a hot area down, could they design a simple Shade? Really sharp to flag that Earth’s shadow misconception upfront! it’s such a common one even among adults, so addressing it directly before the torch and ball demonstration is a great idea. Wonderful choice of story to open with, and the moon diary over several weeks is such a great way to let children discover the pattern of the phases for themselves and with family. I like the use of cotton buds for making the craters too, tactile.Hi Rachel,

Great range of materials here, tin foil, sand, wool and baking paper alongside the usual cardboard will give a thorough investigation into how materials interact with light.
