Thanks for sharing your activity. This is a great lesson plan. One extra thing you can get pupils to think about is also the relationship between light, shadow and temperatures. You can get them to go out with thermometers and measure the temperature in different parts of the school and discuss how we can use shadows to make comfortable spaces on sunny days.Hi Sonali,
Thanks for sharing your lesson plan with everyone. This is a really inclusive approach to teaching the subject, i particularly like how you approach the planets from a tactile perspective too. The small planets are rocky so something like a foil ball could be representative, and a light soft ball like you chose for jupiter is perfect for representing a gas giant.Hi Suzanne,

Great space fact and thanks for sharing! The swap happens because the gas molecules in Earth’s atmosphere (mostly nitrogen and oxygen) scatter blue light away at sunset, leaving a red sky. On Mars, the dust particles are much larger, causing Mie scattering which predominantly scatters the blue wavelengths forward into the line of sight of the observer. The colour that is scattered is also dependent on the elemental composition of the particle. The spherical earth activity also segues really nicely into exploring the how day and night happens. Placing two figurines on a globe and shining a light on the globe to emulate the sun really clearly shows why it can be day in one place and night in the other!
