What a great song! Im going to use this idea super choice and then develop a dance fpr the stars moving across the sky and forming different constellations in tje dance.
Further tomy last contribution i am fortunate to lice within one hour of OM Dark sky and observatory in county Tyrone.amazing set up, facts the ceiling even opens up where they have telescope set up and davagh forest one of the designated night sky areas so highly recommend a visit for yourself or if your school is within visiting distance amazing set up.
Further to my rocket lessons there is an amazing resource that Armagh Observatory can bring the dome to school half or full day for cost. Our hall was slightly too low dimensions for the height of the dome and couldn’t be done outside but I have seen other schools and have thought it amazing so if looking a new idea for the school for space week id recommend this once your dimensions work.
Hi sinead making ooblek very good ive not tried this yet so must give this a go.
The way back home, not sure why I have not seen this book so am very excited to read this now and share it with my pupils. A book not only is amazing to integrate with so many subjects but the illustrations too are also amazing starting point and teaching multi grade it helps as it can be used for different levels at the same time. While my junior senior infants can sequence the story in pictures first class can have alternative endings. Many lessons dont look or work with multi grade but this course has given plenty of examples of ideas to use with multi grade classrooms like my own. The milo and Marvin characters are amazing and give plenty of ideas to use in the classroom just be careful how you google them in your off course prep at home (as I couldn’t remember their names and wanted to clarify). The rocket is amazing classroom experiment. It works so well with 2 litre plastic milk cartons which I use a lot . At home my children got it to go far and were able to decorate it with feathers, sequins, stickers and put our mouse on top. They discovered different ways to move it how they squeezed the carton. I cant wait to show them some rockets launching videos as stimulus as not sure many will have seen these videos at home. The revised arts curriculum continues to talk about 2d and 3d creations so this would definitely be a 3d project to incorporate into arts. We can also do it in pe and drama moving like a rocket, squishing down small ready to take off onto space then moving through space. Often when we are trying to talk about air we can find it difficult as we cannot show it but we can show the effects of the air in the milk carton being full. Also useful when we are trying to teach we are surrounded by air even when we cannot see it. There will be the process of creation as well as the experiment of the rocket taking off so the project topic work will be integrated across many subjects.
I love somany parts of the lesson but the pe shooting star one is perfect for even a wet day in our hall and use the space.
Camila I love these guys amd children will engage with them very well. I love that these resources are free and out there for teachers to use.
Ooh I do love that book and great stimulus
Some great ideas in your lesson
Before explaining my choice I need to explain how surprised I am at the amount if free resources there are available for us in stem and geography history. Starting with the child and where they live and asking parents where possible to send in pictures of their house whether terrace, semi detached, apartments and the children will engage seeing their own house. I use Seesaw a lot for projects like this from home. I would like to then look at an teach as gaeilge and integrate these and using an aims ir when we look at the clothes and eadai lessons. The children in arts revised curriculum encourages 2d and 3d so perfect way to integrate making the house from clay but also from magnetic tiles, straws, lego houses, shoebox etc . Doing more.project and theme work will actually give more time instead of the set time in the timetable which always seems to short but english and stem being together or planning the street in geography or using line drawing and line in the elements of the arts curriculum to develop the drawing of their street, village, school. Continuing then looking at different parts of the world on the map and what their house can look like including ones on stilts above water etc there are so many options to explore snd differentiate in the classroom.
Ooh I have not heard of this book off to Google it and look in libby my online library. Sounds brilliant as I love integrating subjects.
Difficult to choose which one for this module but the topic of space will take many weeks to complete so hope to cover all the choices in my planning for the year. For this forum I will share my ideas about aliens. We will use a picture of earth and who lives here and discuss us. Then I will show photos from Mars and explain features of Mars and get them to use their imagination and decide who lives there, what they.look like, move like talk etc .we will use many writing opportunities in English to develop their character. Then building on my teachnet cpurse from last year I will use their description for gemini or co pilot to create the inage of their alien from their description. We will write a letter to him and get replies. We can ask questions about his planet to find out more about Mars. Other children will ask about a differnet planet and create some inhabitants there too. In drama we will move like them, copy mirror them. In visual arts some of the learning outcomes are about 2d and 3d creations so this wouod be ideal.opportunity to create 3d eith clay or other materials and even a spaceship for their alien. There will be plenty of playful opportunities to learn.
Oh Emma i love Vincent van gogh starry night and linking that in. They will love to look and respond to it integrating it with science.
Doireann I love the opportunities stars bring to the Junior end of the school. I think they will be amazed how many there sre. Twinkle twinkle they will love and know too so a great starting point. Hope it goes well
<p style=”text-align: left;”>As well as Martin waddell books about night and baby bear i really enjoy Jill Murphy book on what next where he imagines going to the moon in the rocket. Also guess how much I love you and using this book to discuss the moon, I love you to the moon and of course the reply and back again. It is a good way to introduce the moon and its phases. As part of homework and home school partnership when they draw the phases of the moon as set homework each week for those 4/5 weeks. Using playdough to make the different phases and knowing it said the different sizes of the earth, moon and sun to be able to somehow model the size difference whether with balloon, parachute or playdough so they can visualise the difference. Being creative and then writing a story of what they saw and writing an acrostic poem called Moon . The children in autumn winter time will enjoy observation if the moon at home near bedtime. We could use shaving foam and some items in ot for the craters. The children will be so excited about the recent moon expedition too. I am intrigued about the lessons in universe in a box and surprised to never hear of some of these resources when I previously taught space and used my own resources.</p>
I love this story and it has great examples of the moon. Even when big bear brings a new lantern there is still so much dark. I also love all the Martin waddell bear stories.
