The lesson I have selected from the ESERO module is animals in the cold. I choose this lesson as it will allow the children to use many hands on activities to learn about animals in the cold.

It allows children to learn about cold places in the world- The Arctic, Antarctic and the North pole. It allows the children to identify/locate these areas on the map. This is a very exciting topic especially around Christmas. the children can watch videos to see these cold places and the animals that live there.

We can discuss how people stay warm in these cold places and how we stay warm at home. Snow suits and how they use different transport- skiing, dog sleighs, etc

Children will also learn about animals that live in the cold- polar bears and penguins. We will discuss what the animals look like, where they live, what they eat. We will also discuss fur and blubber and how they are used. They will learn how these animals also stay warm.

The children will sort pictures of different pictures into cold and hot places/ objects/ animals.

The children will play with tuff trays during aistear- ice cubes and animals from cold regions will be placed in here. This will also the children to free play and learn through play.

The children will also play a who am I game- The children will describe animals or objects from the cold areas.

The children can create pictures of penguins and polar bears during aistear

I will use the resource of web.org as children love stars and often children who live in cities have not seen a sky full of stars

Using photos of places in the locality is great for young children. Children start learning about their areas using landmarks close to their homes, for example Nanny and Granddad live beside the shop so photos will really support their mapping process

This is a great activity to teach stars and stars are truly a great wonder for children especially when children live in cities and do not see them often

              Aliens and space

I would begin the lesson by reading the story “Aliens love underpants”. Children always love this story and it is great for starting discussions on Aliens.

After reading the story we would discuss the book. What happens? What did the aliens look like in the story? What did they travel in?

Then we would discuss other famous aliens- Monsters inc what did the aliens look like in these movies, how many eyes? how many legs? colours? traits? hairy? smooth? etc

Art- The children will be given an opportunity to create their very own aliens using a variety of materials. They can make them from playdough or paper. The children will need to select what shapes are needed for their aliens- squares, circles, ovals, rectangle, square, etc. How many eyes, arms, legs their aliens will have.

After the children create their aliens we will display their aliens and discuss what alien name they decided to select for their alien. The children will take pictures of their aliens and we will use photo story to show families the aliens  at home.

                    The moon

I would start the lesson by brainstorming with the children activities we do in the day and night.

The children will identify the difference between day and night- sun, moon and stars.

I will read the story “Can’t you sleep little bear” to begin the discussions with the class.

I will ask the children questions about the story- why was little bear afraid when he was going to bed? How did big bear try and help?Discuss lanterns and other sources of light?  Did the various size lanterns work? Did they remove the dark? When little bear showed the darkest outside? What did he see in the sky? The moon provided light.

The children will complete art work on the moon. We will discuss the moon and we will use a globe to show how half the world is in darkest when the other half is bright. We will also discuss how someone would travel to the moon. We will discuss how an astronaut walked on the moon

I have really enjoyed completing this module and I have lots of lovely suggestions for teaching space in my class next year. I feel space is a topic that always interests adults and children and I can’t wait to teach it next year.

I would teach an infant lesson about floating and sinking. It is an interactive lesson that allows all children to participate. I always teach this lesson during good weather- when people can use multiple basins outside. It allows all children to work in small groups and it is a very hands on activity.

I would begin the lesson by teaching the children the vocabulary of floating and sinking and ensuring the children understand these terms. The children will brainstorm some items they think float and sink. Then I would introduce the prediction section using objects i have in a bag. All the children predict what objects will float and sink.

After this the children will experiment with the objects to discover what objects float and sink.

Then as a class we will discuss the results.

My interesting space fact is The sun is a star and could fit 1.3 millions Earths inside it

Grainne loved your lesson plan and the shadow puppet song is an amazing idea that I will use with my class. Also I will add the  book the day I met my shadow to my library as it sounds like an excellent book
