HI Jillian, your use of technology in your Home Ec room can greatly improve a student’s knowledge. Using the internet to search for information about food and nutrition is a great learning curve and as long as you are monitoring and guiding the students’ use of tech, it can only benefit their learning.

        Hi Jillian,

I, like you, am trying to update my skills to use technology in the classroom as a learning support tool. I want to be able to use tech as a means to enhance my teaching, develop resources, and use it for assessment in line with our school’s Digital Learning Plan.

          Hi Jill,

My students, similar to yours, would not have access to the technology for use in the classroom. They only have access to it for an hour each week. Using OneNote would be beneficial for them in keeping information in the same place, with easy access.

Collaboration and sharing resources with colleagues is very useful with OneNote giving access to work through links rather than having to send whole files.

OneNote can help Teachers and students alike to store their files and share information. For a teacher, it is a good way to share information with subject teachers and departments. To share with students, assignments, information on exams, videos, pictures, and voice recordings. OneNote can also include access to the immersive reader. This can help when following the history curriculum so the classes can work on similar timelines. OneNote enables you to give direct assignments and feedback to individual students, enabling the teacher to differentiate for the student.

I found learning how to use OneNote difficult; I did extra coursework on the Microsoft learner site and used the YouTube videos from the course several times. My students have very little access to technology, and I think it would be difficult for them to learn how to use digital technology in the short time they have access. I feel it would just be used by them as a place to store the files and information sent by me. I can see myself using it to share files with my fellow subject teachers.

              Hi Jill,

I agree with your comment on the use of quizzes for all learners. In my class, I usually use these at the end of a history lesson to check on students learning. I also use an exit poll to check for understanding of the topic we have studied that day. I find these a good indication of how a lesson went. I then use the information obtained to adjust the lesson for their next class.

In September, I plan to use the immersive reader in my classroom, I work in a special school and feel this programme will greatly benefit my students not just those with dyslexia or ADHD, but all types of learners. The benefit I see is the information which can be collated showing me how the students are responding to the reader, their progress and the fact it can be done at the readers own pace and level. I will implement this for all students in my literacy class using this in conjunction with the speech to text app. This I feel will enhance the student enjoyment of the class as they can see digitally their own progress and will enable me to track the individual student’s progress. The ability to change the functions in the app to line focus, picture dictionary, translation and colour and text preferences will help individual students focusing on their needs when it comes to literacy. I can honestly see this being an app I will use going forward in my teaching.

Digital technology in the History class can bring history to life. The use of the internet for research, verifying facts, and working on timelines is eased by the push of a button. Students are aware of how to use the internet and as long as we are monitoring their use and progress, it makes a difference to the students’ work and keeps their interest in the topics they are studying. Students can share their work online with the Teacher and their peers, receiving feedback, which is an important element of the CBA’s. Teachers can assess assignments or projects when it is done digitally.

Students, when working online, need to be careful when accessing information; it needs to come from a reputable site so they are able to confirm correct data.

We need to realise that not all students would have access to a device at or in the school environment; some schools have limited availability in the technology dept. and would not have the budget to allow every student to develop their digital skills.

Digital technology can greatly enhance learning in my classroom by making lessons more interactive, engaging and accessible for all students. If I had the use of tablets or laptops, I could use the educational apps that are available to support active learning, collaboration, and creativity. Digital tools allow for differentiation, enabling students to learn at their own pace and demonstrate their understanding in a variety of ways. The Digital Learning Framework highlights the importance of using technology to improve teaching, learning and assessment.

The School Self-Evaluation (SSE) process provides a useful structure for reflecting on and improving my teaching. By gathering evidence through student feedback, observations and assessment, I can evaluate how effectively digital technology is supporting learning. SSE encourages teachers to identify strengths, set targets and monitor progress.

Developing my own digital skills will have a positive impact beyond my classroom. By sharing with colleagues and contributing to the school’s Digital Learning Plan, I can support the whole-school plan. This collaborative approach helps create a shared vision for digital learning and ultimately improves outcomes for students and staff in the school.

I agree with your point of the potential of the application Sway to enhance student learning, I think like you this will benefit my students. It is a different way to present information to students rather than PowerPoint, which I use daily. The ease of being able to create different interactive lessons for individual students is a bonus; using text, pictures, and links to videos or podcasts will help when differentiating lessons.

I enjoyed learning how to use Microsoft Sway and Forms, and I can see both being useful in my teaching. I think Sway will be especially helpful for creating lessons. I usually use PowerPoint, so it was nice to learn a different way of presenting information. It could make lessons more engaging and give students a better visual experience.

Forms will be useful for working with other teachers and sharing information. I may not use it as much with students because we only have access to laptops once or twice a week for short classes. As a small special school, our technology budget is limited, so student access to devices can be challenging.

I also completed the Microsoft Learn courses on Forms and Copilot. I found both courses very informative and practical. The Copilot course showed how it can help with lesson planning, while the Forms course gave me ideas for collaborating with staff and gathering feedback. Overall, I learned a lot and picked up some useful tools that I hope to use in the classroom.
