Research Question: How can our class work together to improve recycling in our school?
The children could firstly talk about and investigate what can and cannot be recycled.
They could then monitor how much waste the class produces and identify how much of this waste can be recycled. They could create a graph with this data. They could do this also with the other classes in the school.
The children could then suggest ways to improve recycling in the school. They could work together to sort waste, create recycling posters for the school, monitor recycling bins and share these ideas with the whole school.
They could then give it a timeline and check the progress after a certain amount of time. The findings could then be recorded and shared with the whole school.I really like this idea and I think using it as a class competition would be exciting for the children.
This sounds great and I’m sure your second class will love this since they have a huge interest in Space already.
Assignment 4: I have chosen to answer question one for this assignment.
Many satellites pass over Ireland everyday. I have used the satellite tracker website to investigate these. Some of the 5 satellites that have passed Ireland recently according to the satellite tracker include:
International Space Station: This allows astronauts to conduct scientific experiments in microgravity.
Starlink: This provides broadband internet access.
Sentinel 2A: This takes images of land, forests, agriculture, rivers and coastlines for monitoring.
NOAA-20: This collects weather, climate and atmospheric data used in forecasting and storm prediction. It measures cloud cover, temperatures, sea and weather conditions.
EIRSAT-1: This was built by UCD and was Ireland’s first satellite. It carries out specific experiments. This serves as an educational research mission.
These satellites are excellent as they play vital roles in observing and tracking different components of the Earth.-

Hi Orla,
I agree with you that it would be better to select some small clips from the film rather than watching the entire movie. I also like the idea of using the KWL chart to begin with.
Module 3 Assignment:
The film Home by Yarn Arthus Bertrand is an excellent resource to teach children about climate change facts. It uses beautiful aerial photography to catch the children’s attention. This is much better than just using scientific facts as this would not be as interesting for the children.
I could easily use the scenes shown in the film as discussion points and teach climate facts from these. For example: One example is of the scene of Ice and Glaciers could be used to teach that as the Earth warms, glaciers melt and sea levels rise. After all the main scenes are discussed, the children could work in groups to create posters explaining the climate facts and draw pictures to show the scenes.
We could also use the challenges mentioned in the film to come up with actions as to what the children can do for example: Save electricity, recycle, walk/cycle etc.
I would also like to show the children Greta Thunberg’s speech to show that even children can stand up to environmental challenges and use their voice to better our Earth.Hi Enya,
I agree that the pax video is great and explains it to the children in their own terms that they could easily understand.
Activity 3 – Climate Reporters
I would like to use the climate reporters activity with my class. To begin, I would access the children’s prior knowledge of greenhouse gases and I would also show the class the video ‘Paxi video on Greenhouse Gases’. We would then discuss the video.
We would then talk about the amazing jobs scientists do to predict the future of the Earths’ climate.
The children would then work in groups looking at different scenarios (if more people walked/cycled instead of using a car vs if many more people stopped walking to work/school and more cars were on the road). The children would first write their ideas down and then they would be given one tablet per group to research the C3S Edu Demo.
The children will then in their group record and talk about their lives in 10 years time and how they would predict what it would be like then with future increased temperatures.
The children will then in their groups talk about actions they can take to lesson the impact of climate change and they will create posters to show these ideas. They can then present this information to the class.Hi Breda,
I agree, I like the idea of using the old proverbs and allowing the children to ask at home for any other proverbs that are used in the area.
I also like the idea of allowing the children to work in groups and collaborate.
These activities are very interactive and interesting for the children. They could certainly be used in my classroom with 3rd class as part of SESE lessons with some integration with maths.
I would love to set up a weather station outside on the grass beside the school. Here, the children could record the rainfall and the wind levels. We would make our own rainfall container using a beans tin and pour this into a measuring jug inside after a few days. The children would also make their own anemometer using many materials such as paper cups, straws, lollipop sticks and elastic bands and cellotapes. The children could count how many times this spun.
Inside the classroom, the children could also measure and record the temperature using a thermometer over a couple of days.
We would also as a class discuss and talk about the difference between climate and weather. I would show the children some of the videos that were in this module to help them understand that difference. I would share with the school during a staff meeting the knowledge I gained from this course and give them ideas of how they could study about the difference between climate and weather. -
