I also have a student with severe dyslexia and i cant wait to start using immersive reader with them this year.
I agree the SETT plan is a great tool to support decision making when it comes to learning targets.

July 12, 2024 at 1:01 pm in reply to: Module 1- Introduction to ICT & Assistive Technologies #213919I agree that it should be a collaborative approach between SET and class teacher to create the most appropriate plan for the student with needs
I have three students who struggle with both literacy and numeracy. For literacy I will be using immersive reader as these three students will be progressing to third class and there will be an increase in the amount of text they will need to read across the curriculum. Teaching these students how to be independent in their learning will build their self-esteem. Immersive Reader will also be beneficial to these students to support their maths language. Digital material with office lens can support students in numeracy. Assistive technology can enable those students to complete tasks in both numeracy and literacy and be able to keep up with their peers or work to their full potential depending on the student’s needs. The website top class games has an array of maths games at varied levels to support numeracy and it enables the whole class to participate in maths games no matter what their ability may be.
Please find above an activity I have planned for one of my students. This student is five years old and has a severe phonological disorder and communication difficulty. Using the SETT model I have planned to use the Speak up software to support the student in using his voice and making the sounds he can pronounce with volume while encouraging him to attempt the sounds he finds more difficult to say.
The SETT model is easy to use and works very well using the students support plan to provide additional information. Class teachers, SEN teachers and other professionals can avail of the SETT Model to gain information on the student which in turn will help in their planning. The child’s individual needs and difficulties is primary, the learning environment the student is placed, the learning activities that he SEN teacher would like the student to achieve, and the resources required by the student to do this.. It will be important that I use the SETT model as part of the students support plan, making any changes to the model that need to be made when additional information on the student comes to light. Assessing the student would include, teacher observations, teacher conferencing with the student, checklists, recording results of tasks. The assessments chosen need to be specific to the individual student and the targets set for him.

I have designed an activity for a 4th class student to illustrate and present a story on their summer holidays using Microsoft 365 power point. Working with the child they will type a short sentence using vocab familiar to them for each power point picture. The student will discuss the events of the summer holidays and will be required as part of the task to sequence them. The student will also discuss which events to leave out and which events are more important to include in their powe rpoint presentation. The student will enjoy choosing the pictures to accompany each sentence they have written. Finally with support the student will present the story to their class with support.

Cosan is an essential part of education and CPD for teachers. The curriculum is constantly changing and so students needs are constantly changing and as educators we are expected to keep up with these changes and equip ourselves with the tools required to deliver the curriculum to our students to the best of our ability.July 1, 2024 at 11:14 pm in reply to: Module 2 – Specialist High Tech Options & Microsoft 365 #209989There is an array of assistive technology options available for students in todays classroom which is amazing for those students who struggle with literacy. The immersive reader is one which I will be hoping to use with three of my students who struggle with literacy. It will be tricky for those students at the beginning while they become familiar with immersive reader and learn how to use it but the independence and the sence of responsibility over their own learning that they will gain from using this assistive technology will do wonders for their self esteem and their sence of achievement. Even within the immersive reader software it can further differentiate text for the very weak student by providing a picture for difficult words. It will also help our EAL students who struggle to participate in the curriculum due to the language barrier. We have use office lense to translate text in class to support our EAL students in completing classroom tasks.
July 1, 2024 at 10:21 pm in reply to: Module 1- Introduction to ICT & Assistive Technologies #209974Assistive technology is any device equipment or software that helps people to overcome their challenges to accessing education so they learn communicate and function better. The SETT framework encourages teachers to examine the factors that must be considered in a systematic way. It is important to understand and gather information about the students’ cognitive strengths and weaknesses, the environment they work in, tasks they have to achieve and the curriculum objectives. Finally, the chosen assistive technology should meet the needs of the student and should enable them to complete given tasks.
The main aim of the use of technology is that those students who struggle to learn and would previously have not enjoyed their learning process will now be motivated and encouraged through the use of assistive technology.
The standards from the Digital Learning framework we could address as a whole school could be; firstly that students enjoy their learning and are motivated to learn and expect to achieve as learners. Their learning difficulty should not be an obstacle. Another standard we could work on ties into the previous standard that all students achieve the stated learning objectives for the term and the year. The final standard we could work on which is important to remember that the teacher should respond and adapt to each students individual learning needs and differentiate their teaching methods and learning activities as required.
The use of the Digital Framework will support school self-evaluation on the school’s use of Digital technology across the curriculum and highlight for them what is working and what needs to be changed.
Using a students support plan our SET team outlines the needs and learning targets the student needs to achieve. I think the SETT model is really useful to use when planning because it ensures that we include all the elements that need to be considered when choosing the most appropriate assistive technology to use for each student.
I have just become familiar with Microsoft read aloud which I intend to use this coming year with three of my students who are moving to third class and the amount of text they will be expected to read across the curriculum will increase. Teaching them to scan text and listen to it read aloud is a game changer for them as it enables them to complete questions on text independently.
