I really enjoyed the pax video and I look forward to using them in my class alongside many of the suggestions on this forum.
How has climate change affected biodiversity in Ireland over the last 20 years?
I chose this question because it will help young people to explore how climate change is affecting wildlife and habitats in Ireland. Children spend time outside especially in warm weather, so this topic is very relevant to them.
A discussion on local wildlife to start the topic in the class. Alongside a discussion on changes in plants. I would get the pupils in groups and on the tablets to check Met Eireann, the EPA and the national biodiversity data centre to get reliable information on the topic. In groups they could collect information and present to the class their findings. Alongside this a number of nature walks would be beneficial to aid this topic.
I really enjoyed the link with history too. I think it will be very useful for the pupils.
fascinating. I had no idea about the satellites passing over Ireland. I have found a new hobby.
I used a satellite tracking app to track satellites which recently passed over Ireland. Five satellites were ISS, Sentinel-2A, Sentinel-2B, Starlink-3500 and NOAA-20.
The ISS is a research laboratory where astronauts carry out experiments. Sentinel-2A and Sentinel-2B monitor forests, crops, water quality and effects of natural disasters. These are European space satellites. Starlink-3500 is from Space X. This provides internet technology around the world especially in remote spots. NOAA-20 is a weather satellite that observes clouds, storms, temperatures and climate.
The Home documentary was very informative. It is very visual, shows the beauty of the planet and the distruction that human activities are having on the planet. Viewers ar encouraged to reflect on the their own actions during the documentary and the need to protect the planet for the future.
In my class, these facts could be introduced age appropriately. Ask the pupils what they already know about climate change. Elicit discussion as a whole class. Ensure understanding of climate change. Short video clips would be selected to enable class discussion on how climate change affects the people, the animals and the environment. I would ask the pupils what small meaningful actions we could all do to have a positive impact on the world. I would then get the young people to create posters based on their responses to help others to make a difference.
Activity 3 was engaging and interactive. It would be a very good way to introduce the children to the topic of climate change. The temperature prediction tool helps children to think critically by using evidence and patterns to make predictions. The paxi video explains greenhouse gasses in a simple way for children to enjoy.
Key vocabulary needs to be made clear first, to ensure children have an understanding of the topic. Having watched the video with the class, I would put the children into groups of 4 to talk about what they watched with their group and then use the prediction tool in the groups of four. The groups could compare the predictions during the lesson.
I would also use an incentive like a prize of no homework for the best poster related to the reduction of climate change here at home. One improvement would be to create differentiated activities to support all the children with a wide range of learning abilities in every classroom.
Hi, I really like these ideas. I will definitely use them in my lesson planning. Very good to create links in a collaborative way.
These ideas are excellent. I will incorporate them into my teaching also. Thanks for sharing.
Having completed both activities 1 and 2, I found them to be engaging and appropriate for primary school. Also keeping in mind the need for differentiation in all classrooms is required. It will help the pupils to think critically about the differences between weather and climate while developing numerous skills.
The activities help to incorporate stem through recording weather data. Weather apps could be used to compare forecasts and predictions. I think these activities could be used well as a link with science, geography and maths. I would help my students to reflect on the weather and the climate, the changing patterns.
The activities were fun and with adaption can be used with all pupils in classrooms.
