First I would introduce the story Aliens love underpants. I would read and discuss the storybook. Ask questions like : Where do aliens come from? how do they travel? What do rockets look like?

Tell them they will all get the chance to make a rocket.

Record children’s ideas about what a rocket needs.

Show the children the material you have. Put the children into groups. Each group will decide what materials are best to build a rocket that can stand, aliens can get in etc.

Children will build their rockets and the teacher will observe and ask questions.

Each group will present their rocket

As a whole class discuss what materials worked best

Elaine I love this idea and i know every junior infant class will love it. It captures their attention from the start and i love how it incorporates different curriculum areas.

I like the idea of the lesson “Where do I live” Teaching the class about different homes.

I would start by showing the class different pictures of places people live different houses, apartments, igloos etc. I will ask questions such as Would a family live here, have you seen one of these before.

We would then have a class discussion about why people need homes, what we do in our homes, How everyone’s home is different.

I will then show the class different picture cards and get them to name what type of a home it is.

Children will the get a chance to draw a home and the teacher will help them label

At the end every child should be able to name types of homes and tell the differences between homes.

I love how you introduce this lesson to your class by looking at well known homes. I will definitely use this idea in my classroom.

              Class: First Class

              Lesson: Space and Aliens

Introduce the lesson by showing an image of space. Ask how are the other planets different to the earth?

In pairs get the children to discuss the following “If an alien lived on another planet what would they need to survive. The children should come up with food, water, air, warmth and a place to live. The teacher will need to prompt for these answers.

By the end of the lesson the children should name something found in space and name things an alien needs to survive.

Children will draw a picture of an alien. Every child will use their imagination. Discuss different features the children draw e.g big eyes, wings, long/short limbs.

Get each child to present their  drawing. They can give the purpose of the different features they drew.

I love the ideas you have in this lesson. Especially the story at the start and allowing the children to predict.

I learned so much from this module. I’m going to discuss the activity set with the sun and shadows. Here is how I would use it in the classroom:

I would show a picture of the sun and ask the children what it is and what does the sun give us.
I would then bring the class outside in the sun and get them to look down at the ground and ask “what do you see?”
We will discuss the word shadow and explore our shadows.
I will ask if they can make their shadows bigger/ smaller. I will get them to explore shadows and movement.

Back in the classroom i will ask them “what made the shadow, Where did the light come from?
The class will draw a picture of themselves outside, the sun in the sky and their shadows on the ground

Hi my name is Emer. I was working in SET this year. I love learning about space and I love how curious children are about space. My favorite space fact is that space has no atmosphere to carry sound. it is completely silent.

                        Inquiry based Activity:

                        Class- Junior Infants
Lesson- What can we find in space?

Start by showing the class a picture of space (the moon, stars and planets).
Ask questions: What do you see?, What do you think is in space? Who goes to space? How could we get there?
Set up a space themed play are for the children to explore. This could have toy rockets, spaceships, astronauts, pictures of space.
Discuss what you might find in space
Create a rocket using blocks and art materials

The teacher will guide the children and encourage the children to ask questions, explore and share their ideas.
This is inclusive to all learners as they can participate through talking, building, play and designing.
