Question. How does the green house affect our planet?

        Ages ASD Class

Experiment using two pots with compost and thermometer.  One of the pots with a clear plastic lid to act as the gases and warm up the soil.  Children will read out and carry out instructions independently and devise a strategy on how to record our results. From there we will map a solution and introduce it into our school and homes. AS an extension, we could monitor our carbon foot print in the school over a time period by making small changes such as turning off lights and electrical appliances when not in use. Recycle our waste, look into investing in a poly tunnel to educate the children about our food sources.

We are seeing more children present with anxiety as a result of covid and therefore I would be reluctant to share this video with children without parental input beforehand.

I found this video very hard to watch and I wouldn’t feel comfortable showing it to a class without having spoken to parents first. I would be more incline to share David Attenborough’s movie on climate change as it is delivered with a more positive message. Following on from covid we are seeing heightened anxiety in children and this particularly video may bring about eco anxiety. Children are becoming more aware of climate change and are wanting change but for me as an educator, I will not be using this video as a tool but instead I will use the Nose in the Sky resources.

I have downloaded and read the teacher guide and pupil activities for the ESA resource “Nose up in the Sky”. I really enjoyed the proverbs  activity and this could be a really fun activity in the classroom and offers the opportunity to develop creative writing. We could categorize different weather systems such as rain, sun etc. and match proverbs according to children’s interpretation.

I too was very impressed with Davis A’s video. I found it very relevant, reassuring and encouraging.  I will  be sharing it with the children next year for sure.

I really enjoyed this module. David A’s video really hit home but instead of doom and gloom and possibly scaring children , he came across as reassuring and positive.  An extension in the class room would include the children making their own video and delivering positive reassuring news and possibly inviting other classes to contribute through feedback.

Regarding activity 3, I would invite the children to watch and share the Pax video on green house effect.  After researching and recording their finding, the children could share their findings with others via a news letter to raise awareness

There’s endless opportunities  to bring about fun learning to children in our schools and offer them a chance to direct their  own learning particularly combing bio diversity, with climate change and using the STEM module. Weather  Club is a fantastic idea and a long term goal could be to apply for the green schools flag or even make recordings and share them with the school each week.

Having read  Unravelling STEM: Beyond the acronym of Science, Technology, Engineering, and
Mathematics. I have become enthused about incorporating more opportunities for exploration particularly in my ASD classroom

Stem in the classroom  is allowing the child to become a confident, individual learner with an inquisitive mind. Children come across many problems and having the correct tools as outlined in STEM, the children can  solve their own problems and record their findings. STEM is divided into four categories to help the children solve real problems. Stern is enhanced in the classroom through a variety of media, such as the use of IT but we must also remember to offer the child a concrete tool in order to enhance their learning.

In order to enhance the learning of my students, I would use a buddy system  with senior classes and my ASD class to help with some of the problems the children may face

                        2. . Complete the following sentences using your own words.

                        Weather A, D,F,H & I

                        Climate B, C,E &G

Weather is changes in weather patterns over  a short time span such as minutes , hours and days.

Climate is looking at weather patterns on a long term basis usually taking into consideration the average weather over 30 years

                        3. Discuss the following sentence with your classmates: Climate scientists say that the temperature is increasing but the weather today is rainy and cold

Weather temperature is increasing and causing ice caps to melt which brings about more high pressures

What do you need to remember before starting to take measurements? Discuss with your classmates and note below what steps are necessary for your investigation. Think about what instrument you want to use for your observations and what else you need to take into consideration

A thermometer is required to take measurements. • It is important to make sure that the temperature measurements are taken in the same place and at the same time every day (preferably at noon). • The location should be shaded (so that the Sun does not heat the thermometer directly,) and well-ventilated, such that the wind can blow freely (not in a porch or a partially-covered shed, for example). It is also important that the measurements are not accidentally tampered with, for example by holding the thermometer in warm hands. The thermometer will also need some time out in the air – about five minutes – for it to adjust properly to the actual outdoor temperature.
