II would choose to use to story The way home here to introduce the topic of aliens. This could lead into a discussion on aliens and their existence. We would then talk about our lesson where we will design our own alien. We can first plan and draw how our alien looks and we can then make them using different materials. A follow on acitivty for this would be as a group create a wprld for our aliens to live in using junk art materials. We can then present the world to other groups desciribing the features included and how we think the aliens live on this planet.

I would do a lesson on rockets we woudl begn by using the story the way back home.Read and discuss the story. Tell the children they are going to become space engineers and create their own rockets to help the martian get to and from space. The children can use foam pipe insulation, colourful foam sheets, masking tape and straws to create their rockets. They can add a window and create a picture of the martian. They can then use plastic bottle launchers and stomp on the bottle to launch towards a target. They can then discuss their method and findings after.

I would focus on animals in cold regions as a lesson. There is alot you could do with this but one particular lesson I would do has a focus on art. We would start with the story “Barnaby’s perfect winter coat” which focuses on an artic fox and their coat changing from brown to white in winter to help it hide in the snow. This would lead into a lesson focusing on artic foxes, their habitat, their features etc. Following on from this we would do an art lesson depicting an artic fox hiding in the snow, using a paper plate for the fox and cotton wool for snow around him.

I would choose a lesson on push and pull. We would use a toy car to explore. Children can Place the car on the floor or a table. Gently push the car and watch it roll away. Now pull the car back towards you using a piece of string or your hand. What happens if you push it softly? What happens if you push it harder? A harder push makes the car travel faster and farther. If the car is on a carpet, it may not go as far because the rough surface slows it down. This is called friction. Pushes, pulls, and friction all work together to help objects move or stop moving.Children can discuss before the lesson ideas on how the car will travel on different surfaces. An exension to this activity would be children can create ramps using halved kitchen roll tubes and stick them to the desk to see how quickly the cars will travel using gravity.

I would do a lesson on the sun and shadows. I would use a prompt like a story “My shadow” first and have discussions around the story and what shadows are. Another good book is Can’t you sleep little bear but it focuses more on light sources and the moon but it could also be a good conversation starter to discuss the sun as a light sourse and shadows. We would explore ideas and see what the children know. We would then go outside on a shadow hunt. This would lead to a lesson on shadows using torches and different objects in the classroom and what the shadow looks like. Children will be able to explore what happens when the light source moves closer to the object and further away and feedback to the class after what they discovered.
