Irene I love how simple your sun  and shadows lesson is but leads to lots of playful learning opportunities and makes the younger children discover the outcomes very simply for themselves

Inquiry Based Lesson: Water and Air

        Class: senior classes

        Time: 30 minutes

Learning Outcome: To discover the relationship between water and air

Materials: 200ml bottles  all same shape with hole at base, hole on side and 3 holes on side  2l water bottle with 3 holes on side, card ,tape ,ruler ,measuring jug and sink or basin to do investigation over

Inquiry Question: Will WATER SPILL FROM A BOTTLE WITH A HOLE ?

Introduction (5 minutes) : look at a concept bottle with a hole  of water with a hole which is tapped over. Pupils must discuss what will happen when the tape is removed?

The children can draw or write  predictions. These will be recorded on the WB for the end of the lesson.

        Investigation (15 minutes)

        1. In groups pupils  fill water into a bottle with hole at bottom /1 hole at side /hole at bottom /3 holes in bottle and tape over holes. Fill bottles with water and put on lid . Repeat but this time half fill the bottles.

        2. Remove tape from bottle and see what happens.

        3. The results will be recorded on a simple class chart my bottle with 1 hole at bottom / or 1 hole at side or/ 2 holes at side

Discussion (5 minutes): What happened -did it matter where the hole was? Did it matter if lid of bottle was on or off? Did is matter if bottle was full or half full? Would it matter if hole was bigger?

Conclusion (5 minutes): I will ask the children: What does this show us -Is air heavy….do we know what this is called in science ….can they come up with surface  tension…refer back to learning outcome. Rotate groups and try with bottle and hole in different positions.

Results record all results on one chart. Record in picture and digital format.

Extension : where does this theory come into play in world around us ?

Floating and sinking is a great lesson and offers huge possibility for cross curricular work in more senior classes also.. Make and design the tallest ?narrowest object to float. In Maths problem solve -How many paper clips can I add to a raft before it sinks -calculate optimum weight each raft can hold. Debate in literacy is it more valuable to sink or float . Look at travel by sea past and present and see how they compare and use the floating and sinking techniques. The possibilities are endless
