      Subject: SESE

      Lesson: Hibernation

      Class: First Class

Lesson Objective: The students will give a reason for hibernation, will be able to name 3 animals that hibernate and say how they prepare for hibernation.

Begin with a KWL chart on hibernation to illicit prior knowledge.

      Show presentation made with Gamma:

      https://gamma.app/docs/What-is-Hibernation-zs2egaj8veh7env?mode=doc

Revisit the KWL chart to fill in the ” What I’ve learned” section.

In groups, the children will complete a multiple choice question quiz created on Magic school.

I have learned so much about AI in education on this course and yet I feel I am only beginning to scratch the surface. As Natasha Berg said, AI is here to stay and the current version of Chat GPT is the most basic that there will ever be. We need to keep up with a rapidly evolving situation when it comes to using Artificial Intelligence in our schools. It also means keeping informed about the ethical use of same. I am so glad I’ve taken the first steps to using AI in my classroom.

This is a very inspiring lesson, Ciara. I was really impressed with the quality of your presentation on Gamma and it motivated me to explore this tool to create my own Powerpoint.

I was very interested in the section of this module where Eoghan used Gemini to create newspaper reports about the Easter Rising from two different perspectives. I think this is a great way to expose children to different viewpoints and also help them to identify bias in writing. I look forward to trying this out next year with my students. It is so important to teach children to become critical thinkers and to see how language use can manipulate their ideas and beliefs.
I will use a similar approach in SPHE when looking at media and identifying persuasive techniques used in advertising. I tried this out using Gemini and asked it to come up with an advertisement for Minecraft aimed at children, using persuasive language. I also it gave a similar prompt but asked it to create an advertisement aimed at adults. I think it will be very interesting and worthwhile to compare and contrast both advertisements. It will also be useful to identify the persuasive language and techniques used.

Thank you for all of this information, Ciara. As a teacher in an ASD class, I am encouraging students to identify and name emotions all the time. I will definitely check out resources on Khan Academy.

This module provided a wealth of useful AI generator tools which will be very helpful in my teaching and the learning of students in my classroom next year. I found Magic School fascinating. I had not heard of this before but will definitely try it out in my ASD class next year. I particularly liked the tutorial on creating a social story and using Twee to generate questions.
I will look at Magic School when compiling IEPs for my students. I feel that this could be used as a guide but I will definitely use my knowledge of the students and their level to edit and draft my final document.
Diffit appears to be a game changer when it comes to differentiation which is what I am about in my classroom with levels ranging from Junior Infants to 4th class. I feel that this will be particularly useful when responding to group lessons in SESE and SPHE.
Gamma looks like an excellent resource to create PowerPoint presentations. Much of my curriculum is planned thematically and I feel that using this resource will save hours of work and research when creating images.

I agree, Anne Marie that Copilot would be a fantastic resource to use for creative writing. Encouraging the students to come up with descriptive prompts to create images and reversing the process by asking them to respond to a given image by describing it using detailed language would certainly be motivating.

I work in an ASD class so providing personal and differentiated learning experiences is part and parcel of my job everyday. I am also mindful that my students learn in diverse and varied ways. Finding different ways to engage them in learning can be challenging. I have found that using their particular areas of interest is helpful when I want to make a lesson meaningful and relevant.
A number of my students are avid followers of Minecraft and I have already created Minecraft texts for reading using Chat GPT. I will now use Gemini or Copilot to create texts, giving more detailed prompts, such as asking them to use the first 10 Dolch words. I will also explore Minecraft Education Edition. I will generate quizzes using Google forms.
I did not know about Immersive Reader and I will definitely try this out with a struggling reader in my class.
Like other contributors to this forum, I was horrified to see how AI has been used to monitor and train the unfortunate students in China. I don’t think I could use the verb teach when describing this awful scenario!

I’m interested to read about Khan Academy, James and will definitely research it further to see if it would work in our school.

I’ve only just started this course and already I’m excited about the myriad of possibilities which AI will generate in my classroom next year.
I teach in an ASD setting where students rely on visuals to help them to navigate timetables and much of their learning. I am excited to try out the image creation tools such as copilot, midjourney and imagefx to create clear and meaningful images to help my students. Creating social stories is also a very important part of my teaching. They help students to understand new situations and to prepare for change. I will be exploring the video creating AI tools such as Vidnoz and Pictory. Before today, I was completely unaware of these and their uses and benefits.
I am also looking forward to exploring how AI can be used in assisting my students to learn at their own pace and in their own way and how I can monitor and assess this learning.

I agree, James. Like you I only considered the negative aspects of AI in teaching and learning. To view AI as a tool to help teachers to become more productive, efficient and creative has to be a game changer for us. For me, it’s time to embrace the changes and educate myself about the possibilities.
