Having created the above using Slides, I can definitely see myself using this to create resources for my class. Having used powerpoint for many years, this will no doubt be a learning curve. However, the videos linked in this module are very helpful.
Slides will also be very helpful for student presentations.
I would be less sure of the educational value of Meet in this post-Covid world of ours.
Groups could definitely have benefits for staff members in terms of sharing resources and easing communication.

I created the above Quiz to be used as an assessment for the Gaeilge grammar concept ‘An Aidiacht Shealbhach’. It could be used with Rang a 5 or Rang a 6. It could be used for AoL or AfL. As an AfL tool, it would give the teacher an idea as to the level of the children’s understanding of the basic elements of An Aidiacht Shealbhach. Alternatively, it could be used after you have covered the various rules of the 7 possessive adjectives in Gaeilge as a from of AoL.
This could be extended and made more challenging by adding some questions which require a written response.
I have never used Google forms as a method of assessment. However, from this module, I can see that it has many benefits. Chief among them is the amount it would cut down on corrections. I also really liked the ‘Exit Ticket’ idea proffered during this module as a means of pupil self-assessment. The ability to import into Google sheets to create data is also helpful. I also liked the feedback element.
A drawback which I have noticed while using Google forms in other realms of my life is the ‘allow only one response’ option. If this is selected, then the person filling in the form must be signed into a Google account to fill in the form. This has created problems for me in the past when people filling in the survey do not have a Google account.
I really liked the piece about knowledge construction as a 21st Century Skill. The lesson example from the presentation, ‘House on Mango Street’, was a very effective way of giving students an insight into the life of an immigrant and the challenges they face. Reading a variety of material and then interviewing a person who emigrated to America would have definitely allowed the children to effectively construct knowledge in this realm while at the same time creating empathy. Writing the poem allowed pupils to apply this newly constructed knowledge in their English lesson.
While this lesson was based on the American experience, I could see value to a similar approach to knowledge construction in the Irish context, particularly with regard to the immigrant experience. This, of course, would have to be done with great sensitivity.
Another 21st Century Skill which is of utmost importance today is collaboration. I loved the 203o Winter Olympics host-city investigation. Given that the Olympics are very much in public consciousness at the moment, I could envisage myself using a simplified version of this lesson with my class to develop the skill of collaboration. I would use Docs and Slides as part of this project.

A huge benefit of it, definitely at the senior end at any rate, is that it ensures that students are familiar with an online learning platform before they head to secondary school. The vast majority of secondary schools now use online learning platforms to some degree. In this case, familiarity will breed contentment – children who are already familiar with an online learning platform from primary school will find it easy to adapt in secondary school where many teachers expect assignments to be submitted online.
I also like the Google Forms feature for carrying out assignments. These can be a time saver for teachers and also provide teachers with data on student attainment levels.
During the pandemic, I used Google Docs to allow for student collaboration when the schools were closed. This was reasonably effective and the children enjoyed it.
A school who has chosen digital literacy as part of their SSE process might decide to employ Google Classroom to enhance pupil learning and digital literacy, particularly at the senior end. SeeSaw may be a better option for the junior end of the school. The use of Teacher ‘classrooms’ to facilitate collaborative practice is also something that schools might choose to adopt under the SSE process.

Having perused Google Applied Digital Skills section, I was particularly taken with the activities geared towards starting a new school year. These serve the dual function of providing nice ‘getting to know you’ activities while also introducing children to the basics of the various Google products.
The lesson which I have chosen to use is attached here.
I feel this is a great introductory activity for pupils unfamiliar with Google Classroom. During the pandemic, we, as a school, used SeeSaw to good effect and I used a similar method to the one outlined here to familiarise my class (6th class) with the platform.
This year, I have Rang a 4. It will be 3 years since they have used any online platform so this introductory lesson will be very beneficial.
During this lesson, the children learn how to join a class, find an assignment, seek help, submit an assignment and respond to a question. All of these are important skills which the children will need to use throughout the year.
The children would find the videos very helpful if they are unsure of what to do. They are short and to the point. I also liked the Quiz feature at the end which provides the children with an opportunity to review what they’ve learned.
Success in this lesson would stand the children in good stead for a year of using Google Classroom.
