Reuse, reuse, recycle is a very good way to teach children at a young age to minimize the amount of waste, Reminding children to reuse their water bottles and bring reusable bags to do shopping will all help to save the environment.
Yes, the children really take ownership of the green schools initiative in our school also and learn a lot about recycling and conserving energy. Parents also car pool where possible and local children walk and cycle to school. The parent association run bring and buy days where people can purchase good items for their children at a reduce cost, any profit then goes to the school for resources.
How Climate change is impacting in my local area & How I would engage my pupils to explore this further.
Climate change is one of the most pressing threats to human animal and plant life.
Weather patterns are no longer predictable and we can have four seasons in one day,
Storms and flooding are becoming more frequent and this has caused huge problems in the Production of food and farmers have found it difficult to manage their livestock due to the ongoing inclement weather.
We have a green schools committee where we encourage the children to recycle their waste, conserve energy, save on water etc. as part of the school self evaluation, we develop an action plan and monitor and evaluate the progress at the end of each term.
Also in my local town the Red cross provided a lot of support for refugees.
The Irish red cross has different programs to assist refugees when they come to Ireland. They have program that matches Ukrainian people seeking temporary refuge in Ireland with householders throughout the country. They provide support under this program for both the newly arrived person and the family hosting them.
They also have a program that supports people living in life-threatening situations in their own country to travel to Ireland. In many cases, this program reunites these refugees with family already in Ireland.
Schools play an important role in supporting refugees and welcoming them into the community, However, it is only in the last few years that schools have received funding from the government to provide support for these children.
– In our school children receive EAL and learning support classes to help with overcoming language barriers and to help settle into the school, so that they can fully participate in school activities.
– Schools can create a safe haven for these children and can provide some support also for their parents, providing them with information to help them to integrate into the community. As we are a community national school, we tend to get the majority of Refugee children coming to our school. This can prove to be a benefit for adults and children in the school as we can see when we host intercultural day.The special education team helps to support these children who very often have been in very tough situations.
So true Cathriona, during covid, we as a staff group became aware of families who had no access to internet and resources that they could use to homeschool their children. We came up with a plan to provide packs for those families with pencils, copies, workbooks, colours, readers etc so that their children could keep up with their learning while at home.
Access to quality education opens up a world of opportunities for children, we are lucky in Ireland to have access to good schools and a updated curriculum where children are given opportunities to develop to their full potential. However, in developing countries such as in Africa this is not always the case. When people are able to get quality education they can break free from the poverty trap.
Education helps to reduce inequalities and to create gender equality. It also empowers people everywhere to live more healthy and sustainable lives.Education helps to foster tolerance between people and bring harmony in society.
I have seen this also in my school and we have lots of different cultures, I also find that the children from different countries for example , the Nigerian children play together and the polish stick together etc. We as Teachers don’t encourage this in the classroom and we aim at doing group work with different mixed groups.
I have seen infant children during Aistear gravitate towards gender specific toys such as Girls playing dress up and with dolls and boys going for the trucks, cars and construction toys. If development education is introduced and highlighted to the children at a young age it might give children more freedom to play with toys of their own choice. Usually in the Junior classes children play freely with both genders but this changes from about first class on. Teachers need to encourage children to play and work together regardless of gender.
How gender stereotypes can feed in to school self evaluation
Teachers need to support children to look at ways to tackle discrimination in particular among girls.
Educating children about the importance of gender equality is crucial to ensuring equality
for all. Within the last five or six years changes are taking place which are positive and this should be addressed when looking at whole school self evaluation.
Development education is a lifelong educational process which aims to increase people’s knowledge of the unequal world we live in. It aims to encourage people towards taking action for a fair and equal world. It provides a unique opportunity for people to reflect on their roles and responsibilities as global citizens. It’s about attitude and about social issues that are going on in the outside world. We are living in a world where there has to be change, we all know that people in power have misused their power and poverty, hunger and inequality still exists.
Development education gives young people a voice and they can be active participants in their learning. They will learn how to make positive changes in the world around them
School self evaluation
It is essential that children receive a quality education and development education must be an integrated part of the primary school curriculum thus enabling children to develop socially through living and cooperating with others in society.
Development education explores the link between local and global and gives children the
Support in learning about the wider world.
As Teachers, we must provide opportunities for children to practice these skills and values such as equality, diversity, social justice, interdependence and so on as they learn about development education. Using the internet to bring the world into the classroom and encouraging the children to explore the parts of the world where there is poverty and inequality.
Development education is about seeing things from a different perspective and to understand what it is like to be in their shoes.
