I would use the Alien Chemistry activity with my First and Second Class by using sensory exploration and imaginative to also integrate with Aistear.
I would use the story ‘Field Trip to the Moon’ by John Hare. The story is about a class that does a trip to the Moon where a child takes a nap and gets left behind. They draw on the rocks with crayons and some of the moon aliens pick up the crayons an begin drawing too.
We would see what the aliens could use to do art with when they use up all the crayons in the pack the little pupil left behind.
We would mix some baking soda (moon dust and vinegar with food colouring) We would look at the colour changing and measure the temperature of the liquid. We would make predictions and record them then measure what happens.
The pupils could then write a potion recipe of their own for the aliens. This sounds great and I will love to try this next year. I like the way you tell the pupils they are space scientists and are trying alien potions. The children love pretending like this. Using prediction is great as well.
Module 4 Assignment
I would introduce Paxi to my class and we would watch his video. When he would visit Earth He would ask them to examine Where do you live.
We would use some satellite images to look at Earth then Ireland and zooming in to our local area. We would look at how what we can see from our village to the school and investigate any feature that might be important. We would then go outside and see what we can see that the children might have spotted on the satellite image. This would be important to examine and think about features that the might not have noticed before even though they pass them every day.
We would then draw their own house in a picture then what might be around their house then on the edge of the picture things that might be further away that they noticed.
We would see is there any way to improve our locality and look after nature i.e planting or picking up rubbish.Module 4 Assignment

This is a great way to show how challenging cold weather was in the past and how we have changed how we deal with cold weather.
• Activity Set: Space and Aliens
I would begin by reading from books such as
• The Way back Home by Oliver Jeffers
• Don’t Feed the Aliens! by Mark Sperring
These are a great way to begin a discussion with my First and Second class about aliens and get them thinking about what they might be like. We would discuss life on Earth and what allows us to survive and whether an Alien habitat on another planet might need these or if they would be different and maybe adapt to hotter or colder conditions.
The children could design an Alien passport for if they want to visit Earth what they might need. Then they could do a drama on what way you could communicate with an alien for the first time and how you would get over the language barrier.
The children could create finger puppet aliens and talk to each other with them and then do a painting of an alien and these could be displayed around the classroom with pictures of the children in astronaut costumes beside them.I will have First and Second next year and these are all great ideas. I think they would enjoy a lesson with Space and Aliens. It is so important to discuss their ideas with them and get them to think about what is needed to sustain life would Aliens drink water and need food to survive. Drawing an alien is a great activity and allows them to show their creativity and thinking.
I would read a story about the Moon called When Moon Became the Moon by Rob Hodgson. This talks about when space and the planets were formed in a child friendly way and talks about how the moon controls the tides and how this benefits sealife and animals. It also looks at the phases of the moon.
We would talk about what the moon looks like and look at the moon when it appears during the day. We look at the appearance and how it changes during the month when we observe it. We would look at the craters formed on the moon too and try a flour experiment dropping objects to see how the craters are formed on the moon in a similar way.
I also really like the Brainpop series and there is one about The Moon looking at what it is how it was formed and how silent it is on the moon. It looks at gravity on the moon as well. We would talk about what it would look like standing on the moon and how you would feel as an astronaut.

I really like the idea of KWL charts. It will get the children thinking about what they know and much more open to new knowledge. Stories are a great way to get the pupils interested. The man in the moon really engages them and using biscuits is a funny way of getting them thinking.
This is a great lesson I will try this with my class next year. Magnets are an area they would love to investigate.
I have First and Second Class this year so we would look at Energy and Forces and Gravity. We would look at push and pull by jumping up and asking the question what pulls us back down. We would look at pictures/videos of astronauts and wonder how they are floating. We would look at designing a parachute for the Mars Rover that would help it to stay on the ground.
We would predict with a few materials, kitchen towel, plastic bags, netting, material like cotton. We would predict which would be best for slowing the drop of a lego figure attached with string. We would do the drops then discuss which is best.
We would conduct the drops at the same time then and see which falls slowest. We would look at what kind of materials that are used for astronauts and talk about the characteristics of what is needed for a successful parachute. We would talk about the pulling force of gravity and the pushing force of the parachute.Hi My name is Mairead and I’ll be teaching First and Second Class next year. An interesting Space Fact is that Dan Tani an astronaut who completed 2 Space Flights and 6 spacewalks is married to a Cork native and rang a pub called the Tap Tavern in Kinsale from Space. When he rang and they asked who’s there? He said Space. He’s visits the pub whenever he’s in Kinsale where his wife is from so it was quite funny at the time (a few years ago ). He also sometimes gives out the plaques for Discover Primary Science in Cork so I luckily got the chance to meet him when our school got a plaque at the ceremony.
