For this lesson I would create a space ship with my class.
We would watch the moon landing, we would read the Alien’s in Underpants Save the World.
For SESE we create the mouse rocket – discussing changes that happen different bottles are used. We also watch and observe the dancing raisins experiment. We use the fizzing rockets experiments also.
We would watch some rocket launch videos and discuss how space crafts should be created what they’d need to be made of.
We would plan our space craft and then using recycled materials we create our own space ships.

I really liked the Stellarium, it seems to be a fantastic resource to use on the ITW.

I would use the resources provided to teach lesson based on the weather and what to wear?
We would discuss the weather, the seasons, different types of clothes we wear at different times of the year.
We would view images of different types of weather and discuss which season is most likely to be found in. We would also discuss images of scenes, and which season it is, how do we know? We would observe inmages of people wearing different types of clothes and group them according to which type of weather they are dressed for, which season it is.
For Drama – We would use the dress up box to dress up and the other children would decide what weather their peers are dressed for.
For Art – we would design an outfit for a particular season. WE would give reasons for our choice of clothing to suit a season of their choice.

Agree, we tend to stick to the factual stuff, but they would really love the idea of creating their own aliens to survive on another planet.

                  Space & Aliens
I really liked the idea of creating an alien that might survive on Mars. I would discuss life on Earth initially and how the position of our planet provides the ideal living conditions for us.
We would the use you tube videos and books to discuss what it might be like to live on Mars and what an alien might need to live there. We would discuss the landscape, the temperature, the dust. We could use google maps to explore images of Mars, and books with images of Mars.
We would draw an alien first and discuss why we add certain features to the alien.
We would then use play to create our aliens and we do a show and tell to discuss the aliens and it’s features and reasons for our choices.

Love this idea, have used chalk and drawing their shadows before, love the idea of the torch creating shadows – could use ipads to take pictures of the shadows they created to share with class.

                      The Moon

I would teach my class about the moon using the excellent resources provided.

We would watch a video of the moon landing, discuss what we know about the moon. Discuss the spherical shape of the moon and it’s craters.

I would the pictures of the moon and discuss cultural differences in observations of the moon.

We would use the flour and dropping balls to recreate the craters and discuss how they are formed.

We used the fabric activity to recreate the moon, and using layering of fabric to create the surface.

I would use clay to mold the shape of the moon and a upside paint brush to create craters in the moon.

Hi my name is Mags, I am teaching 1st class for the first time this year.
An enquiry based activity I would carry out with my class is What a plant needs to grow?
I would discuss what a plant needs to grow – soil, water, light.
WE would read books, watch videos about plant life.
I would divide the class into groups and set up different scenarios, with soil, without soil, watered – not watered, in sunlight out of sunlight. We would make predictions and observe our plants. We have a control plant and discuss where to place the plant for optimal growth and discuss this based on our previous research.
We would create a pictogram of the plants week on week, and discuss which plants were progressing and how and hypothesis reasons for plants growing and appearing differently.
We would finally compare our predictions to end results and compare our control plant to our experimental ones and identify differences and reasons why?
