This sounds like a great investigation. I really like the idea of turning it into a game. A treasure hunt is always good fun.
Research question: What can we do as a class to reduce our carbon foot print?
I would introduce this lesson by discussing and brainstorming with the class- what is Climate Change and what are we currently doing that is having a negative affect on our local encvironment?
Following on from that we would discuss and explore: What does Carbon Footprint mean? We would all use the carbon footprint calculator to determine our own impact on Climate change.
I would then divide the class in to groups and ask them to identify and list things that 1: We could do as a class to reduce our Carbon Foot print and 2: We could do individually to reduce our carbon foot print.
When we have decided on our targets/actions we will put our plan into action, recording everything and noting any observations along the way.
I hope that this approach will show the children how important and how easy it is to implent these changes in our daily school lives. That all our efforts will have a positive impact on our climate.
Finally I will get the children to create a simple presentation outlining what we have done. They will then present this to other classes encouaging them to do the same.
I explored the ESA resource: From the ground to the sky. I found it to be very interesting, engaging and I think it could be used across most class levels.
A nice way to introduce the topic would be looking at pictures from a birds eye view. I would show my class pictures of our school and surrounding areas in this format and start our lesson from there.
I really enjoyed the matching photos activity. I think there is a lot of scope for group work, pair work and individual work. I think the photos would really grab the childrens attention and imagination also. There is also a lot of scope here for linking this topic across other curricular areas like an English writing lesson or a History lesson also.
I’m really looking forward to trying out some of these activites with my class this year and seeing how the children engage with these wonderful resources.
I agree this video really shows the huge impact climate change is having on our planet. I also agree that we as educators need to be very mindful that we dont scare our pupils and that we show them that there are positive things happening and we can make a positive impact on this ourselves.
Home is a very powerful documentary. It show cases our Earth and how beautiful it is whilst also showing the massive impact Climate change has had on our magnificent planet. It also clearly shows that the responsibility of Climate Change and it’s huge impact on the Earth does not soley fall at the feet of one country but that it is up to each and every country and us as individuals to do our bit in order to make long lasting change.
When teaching about Climate change I think this would be an amazing introduction to a lesson or a great resource to use as part of an English writing lesson or as part of a debating lesson. I would however be very mindful that it is a hard watch at times and would be more suitable for middle to senior classes. I would also be very careful to also focus on the positives and how we can all play our part.
I found activity 3 interesting, very important, especially with whats going on in the world today and very practical. As I have a 1st class I would begin with a chat about the green house effect to see what the children already know. From there I would introduce the Paxi Video. This is very child friendly, colourful and I think it will really grab their attention. When the video finishes I would have a class discussion about it and try and keep it as positive for them as possible.
We would then look at how we can take temperatures and how we could record them. From here we would look at our role in this and what we can do at home, in school and in our community to tackle climate change.
I do think it is vital to get the message across but equally not to scare the children. So ill be very mindful to keep the lesson/lessons as positive and productive as possible.
I agree there are a lot of opportunities for differentiaion and these resources could be used across a wide range of classes. I cant wait to use these resources with my class also
<p style=”text-align: left;”>This module “Unravelling STEM: Beyond the Acronym of science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics” ( 2018) was very interesting and will be of great value to me when teaching 1st class about weather and climate this coming school year. The videos are very engaging and the children will really enjoy them and the songs also.</p>
The ESA resource: Nose up high in the sky is a fantastic resource.. it provides plenty of scope, great ideas and can be used across the curriculum also. I think the idea of setting up a weather station in the school is brilliant.. it would be a great whole school activity. I also think the children will love being Weather Detectives , especially in the Junior end of the school – a great idea for aistear and other role play.On relection, one part of the module really got me thinking… do I focus enough on the engineering aspect of STEM activities and lessons in my own classroom.. from reading Listons paper I could see the importance of providing my class with real life activities to really get them to learn and be more focused on this area.
