Hi Aisling,
This is such a cute and accessible way to teach this topic at the infant level. This is definitely something I’d love to try out with my own infant class!
My name is Lauren and I am a Junior Infant teacher. I will be moving to Senior infants this year and love teaching at the infant level. My favourite space fact is that 1 million earths can fit inside the sun – I find that fascinating to think about!
An inquiry based activity that I did with my Infant class this past year was around the planets in our Solar System. Initially we discussed the question if you could visit any planet which one would you choose. We then learned a catchy song from youtube ‘There are 8 planets in the solar system…’ which had a cute cartoon video and facts about each planet in the song. Infants love learning through music and actions so learning this song helped their knowledge of the planets. Then we imagined that we would become astronauts and discussed which planet would be the best for humans to visit. We talked about what the planets would have, what might be hard for us on different planets and what we would need to bring with us. The children then got to design the photo of themselves in an astronaut suit and choose their favourite planet to create in our art lesson. They wrote a sentence about their favourite planet. The children loved this activity as it really got them thinking about and discussing the different planets, giving reasoning for their favourite one. This activity encompassed art, literacy, music and stem learning and was beneficial and enjoyable for them.
