I have created a digital story based on ‘How bees make honey’. Using Google slides is a very good way of allowing the children to work both individually and collectively. Linking a quiz, created in Google Forms, is also a good way for them to revise the topic covered that day for homework. The fact that they are not using the text book and not writing out their answers to the quiz in a copy doesn’t seem like work to them.

I use mind maps regularly in class. I find them very useful for brain storming topics with the children and for recapping over topics once they are finished. The option to create these in Google Slides will <span style=”mso-spacerun: yes;”> allow me to save these and revert back to them on a regular basis. I have never used Google classroom before but having now completed the course I feel there are lots of new resources I can use in the classroom in September. IT resources in our school are limited at present but have improved greatly over time. There are not enough devices for every child in the room so this can cause problems in terms of individual work and access for every child while not having any child waiting for a device to come free. Hopefully this will improve going forward therefore allowing an increased use of resources like Google Classroom. From a management perspective I can see how Google classroom is beneficial in larger schools with high numbers of staff. For smaller schools it may not be as useful but options like Google Meet and setting up groups with the staff will certainly help.
Hi Jen,
I really like the quiz you have created using Forms. It is definitely something I will use myself as I often struggle with finding good resources as Gaeilge for the class. The option to be able to attach images will help greatly. I think getting the children to create their own quiz and sharing it with the class would be something for the more able children also.
I have created a quiz in Google forms based on the Celts from our History book. The quiz would be aimed at 3rd and 4th class. I have weighted the questions and also added an image to one of the questions as an aid. The option of being able to add video clips will also help with understanding the particular topic as a quick form of revision. I also like the ability to be able to provide feedback on an individual basis as it is not a ‘one size fits all’ scenario when it comes to providing feedback to the children. I think this is a very good method of assessment for any subject and I like the way the Forms and Sheets can be easily combined to create individual assessments for all subjects. Being able to compare individual children against the class average or norm is also very handy as a handover tool for the end of year meetings.
The document states that 21st century workers need to know more about the world, think outside the box, become smarter about new sources of information and develop good people skills among other things. It also suggests that 21st century workers are sensitive to foreign cultures and conversant in foreign languages. It is also mentioned in the text that countries like Finland who are close to the top if not at the top of all the charts, allow collaboration time for teachers within their working week and that they have a work space or open plan office space where they can gather and discuss, collaborate, plan and implement new methodologies etc. This does not exist in schools in Ireland.
The new curriculum is proposing a 3rd language be introduced from 3rd to 6th class which is great to see and ticks one of the boxes mentioned above. The time allocations have also been altered to allow for the changes in the curriculum but I think we are a long way from countries like Finland.
I haven’t used Jamboard before but having explored it with the intention of doing a KWL chart for any topic really, I think it will be something I will be using in the future. It allows the children to direct their own learning, come up with their own questions and use appropriate tools to source information to answer the questions.

I’m a first time user of Google classroom and the more I’m using it the more opportunities I’m seeing for use in September. I’m a 3rd and 4th class teacher at present in a small rural school. We just got some laptops recently and the children are very keen to get using them. I will definitely assign some work to the children using Google classroom and will be getting them to do certain assignments in groups. The option to assign work to groups as well as all students will be very useful for differentiation. I am also keen to investigate the gameification video clip further to see where I can use this for classroom activities.

The use of Google classroom will also encourage collaboration and teamwork within the class. The option for them to comment on posts will be useful also for them to help each other out on particular assignments.

I liked the above lesson where it showed how to create your own website. We created posters last year when talking about advertising in SPHE while also integrating with literacy and visual arts. I think this would be taking it to another level in terms of our digital learning and working towards the goals as set out by the schools digital learning framework. The three videos are very helpful and show each step in the process of creating your own website. This would be useful for advertising school events, choosing your audience and the content of what to share on the website.
Team work and collaboration is also encouraged in this activity as the children are encouraged to discuss and plan the content before starting the development of the website. This can be difficult for some as there are those who want to take control and those that are happy to sit back and let others do the work. The website can also be shared with the class group and allows for immediate assessment and feedback for the children.
