For Module 5 I chose Alien Chemistry activity set with First class level

I chose to do this activity set as its quite straight forward and I know they will be so excited!

      Dancing Raisins

We will at first gather together and discuss that we are goinn to do a Science experiment by adding raisins first to water and  next to a fizzy drink.

I will ask the children to quickly wirte down on a whiteboard what they think will happen and say to their partner.

Next we will add the raisins to two containers, one containing water and the other containing a fizzy drink and in the first one the raisins will sink to the bottom but in the fizzy drink one the raisins will rise to the top and will keep doing that until the carbon dioxide is gone.

I will watch the childrens reactions and they will tell me what they thought and how it differed from their predictions.

The children will then do a picture of the experiment and label it.

We can follow up with another experiment on baking soda and a balloon and  do the mice rockets for space week!

Great lesson Aisling and I like that story to peak their interest at the start.

This is great lesson and so practical. The children will enjoy this and it’s a break from the usual learning.

Hands on Classroom themed Activities: Weather: Animals in the world

Children will identify different types of weather and explain how animlas are suited to different weather conditions.

I will start the lesson with two pictures on the whiteboard, one of ice and a snowflake and the other of a hot flame and the sun. This will get the class thinking of what the lesson will be about.

I will start by asking them which animals do they think live in the hot climates and which live in the cold and why, i.e the penguin lives in the cold climate because it has rubber skin to protect it rom the cold.

Activity: The children will work at their desks with a partner and sort cards into the correct place, eg, I am placing the tortoise on the sun because it likes the sun. I will walk around and make observations.

Next using a template they will do a picture of their favourite animal and write a sentence underneath it and label the weather.

Conclusion: We willl review the groups together and play a little game, I will ask them to name an animal and their friend has to describe the weather it lives in! Chidlren could do the Esero 5; Animals in the cold lesson as a follow on lesson using the Esero resources of the Polar bear and the Penguin.

Stem link for a future lesson: the children could design and build a simple shelter for an animal using recycled materials from home, then test which shelter protects it from the “rain”(sprayed water)or “wind” (a fan if needed) , which would encourage investigation, engineering and problem solving.

Activity set: Space and Aliens for First class level

I would start the lesson by Putting Mars on the board and having a Mars bar in my hand to catch their attention! I would ask them do they know where Mars is and what it looks like. They will use think pair share to talk to their partner and I will record what they say for later.

We will look at photos of Mars and discuss similarities and differences between Earth and Mars. They will jot down briefly some points and a quick sketch on a posted of what they imagine a Martian looks like! They will probably not the colour and the lack of water.

We will then put all our posteds on a sheet and talk about them at the end of the lesson. We will finish the lesson by making our Aliens out of Clay and then discussing what we said at the start of the lesson and discuss some of the posteds. I will leave them on display for children to look at them all.

We will then re-vist the topic to write to a character on Mars, one of our Clay models and write him a postcard to say hi and then get a few children who enjoy writing to reply! We will then paint our clay and design a little sapceship that would be suitable for all the class to fit on should we go on our school trip to Mars! We will do further short lessons on an imaginary trip to Mars, an Art lesson on what it would look like if we were all up there and our spaceship on the way up.

If children are enjoy the lesson we will integate it to 2 d and 3 shapes in Maths (the rocket) and read stories on space and watch videos about Mars and Teacher in Role, I myself or one of my colleagues will dress up as a similar character to one of their clay models and sit at the top of the class and they can ask questions and sing a space song to him.

Pleanry:What did we learn about today? Did you enjoy it? What are you looking forward to doing on Space next time? Would you like to live on Mars?

I love your lesson Mary, love that they pretend to go to Space and then you can use it for so many areas after such as, writing, Art etc. Sounds like an enjoyable lesson.

Hi Ashling I enjoyed your lesson and I like that you linked it to Maths with the 2D and 3D Shapes.

I will do my lesson plan for First and Second class on the Moon and its phases.

We will start by introducting the topic of the moon by questioning the class about “What does the moon look like”,  the shape of the moon and images of the moon and I will record what they think to address later. We will look at phtoos from the Esero pack on the whiteboard.

We will then listen to the poem  “Man in the moon, man in the moon, I see you from my bedroom” They will discuss this poem at their tables in pairs using think pair share and tell me what they think of it and colour the picture.

Next over a couple of mornings we will go outside and look at the moon. They will then over a couple of weeks watch the moon in the evenings and record their findings and bring teddies and drawings and perhaps photos to class to leave on the shared table.

We will then return to the lesson and I will have a wordbank and a table of Acrt supplies and different shaped card, cresent and little spheres and I will then explain about the phases of the moon and we will look at pictures of the different phases.

Next we will play a game in a circle of how to represent the new moon the full moon and the last quarter and the first quarter of the moon by sitting in a circle and turning their backs, making d shapes and b shapes and half circles.

Lastly, we will design our own moon using the arts and crafts after agreing that the moon is a sphere and like a football. We will look at the video on you tube “Paxi and our moon” first and then using glue, cardstock, spheres etc we will make our own moons.

When they are finished we will discuss the shapes of the moons and why they chose this and which phase they chose. They will write a paragraph on what they chose to do while using their wordbank and template and place it next to their Art and we will ask Second class to come in and see their finished work.

                        Inquiry based activity.

                        “Gravity” First class lesson

For this activity I would start the lesson with a prop maybe a pencil on each desk and ask the children to throw it up and see what happens. When it comes back down we will discuss why and briefly and look at a brief video of how things float in space.

I will introduce the word Gravity by writing it on the board and record what the children think it means for later. Children will work with a partner for a few minutes to talk about other objects.. I wonder if a feather would fall slowly.

Investigate/; Which objects fall the fastest?

                        feather, paper, plastic block, sponge

First they will predict, next they will test and then we will discuss and I will then explain Gravity and show examples of apples falling and us all staying in one place. As part of our Art lesson we could design a parachute for an astranaut using classroom materials.

                        Reflection

Discuss what we did and what we learned today. Turn to a partner explain what gravity is and one thing we learned and then we share with the teacher.

                            Ice breaker Activity:

Hi My name is Karen. I will be teaching First class this year. My favourite Space fact is that in parts of space it rains glass (tiny silicate particles).
