I created a digital story using Google Slides on the topic of Mount Vesuvius.

I envisage that this digital story would be used as an introductory lesson to the 79AD eruption of Mount Vesuvius and the city of Pompeii. For this lesson, I would have the students working in pairs with iPads to answer the questions in the presentation. As part of the study, I would have the students make their own digital stories on the eruption, create quizzes for each other using Google Forms and also use Google Earth to view the area in the modern day.

I have created a form for a quiz on ‘Aimsir’ for Gaeilge.

I work in a Gaelscoil and often find that it is difficult to find good, engaging Irish language resources for my students. We often end up making the resources ourselves and sharing them amongst each other as a staff. This quiz is very simple – I would use it with my 6th class as an introduction to Google Forms. As far as I am aware, the children in my class won’t be familiar with forms. I think if I assign this task to them in pairs, they will find it fun! Because it is simple from a content perspective (ie the Gaeilge won’t be too challenging for them), they will be able to focus on the process of using Forms correctly. Once they have all had a chance to complete the Form, I will be able to start using Forms with them as a stronger assessment tool. I would also love for them to try creating their own Forms too.

After reading through the document “Redesigning Education: Meeting the Challenges of the 21st Century”, I have chosen the skill “Knowing More About the World.”

The Covid-19 pandemic put teachers into a position where we needed to engage with technology quickly and in new ways in order to reach our students. I think the pandemic taught us that the world is really very small when we use the correct technology tools.

I spent quite a bit of time browsing the various Google For Education apps – I was looking for an app that would help me shape a Geography lesson for 5/6th students. I already use Google Earth in the classroom and find it really great. I was hoping to use the Virtual Field Trip resource but couldn’t seem to access it? Perhaps a course admin can help me!

I did however manage to access Google My Maps and was able to view some maps that had been recently created. I would love to use this resource with my children – for them to create their own maps based on their home activities, eg. where I live, where we shop, my sports club/music lessons, grandparents’ house etc.

            My sample class: https://classroom.google.com/c/NTU0NTgxNzc3NzAy

I used Google Classroom while the schools were closed during the Covid pandemic. Although I was using it daily, I feel that there are so many aspects of it that I never got to grips with and that’s why I chose to do this course. Some of the benefits of Classroom that found are:

-easy sharing of assignments between teacher and student

-very easy for teacher to give individual feedback on work (also privately)

-students being able to take direct ownership and pride in their work (Google Slides in particular)

I hope to use it again with my 6th class next year!

              Hi everyone,

I searched for resources relating to Arts and Culture and found a brilliant resource called “Viola the Bird.” This would be a great resource to use to enhance a music lesson. The children can “play” the viola, rather direct a funny looking bird to play, but in order to complete the task correctly, they must be aware of note values and tempo. I think this would really engage students and could really bring a music lesson to life.
