      Lesson:
      Rocket launch

      Class : first class

Science vocab: push, pull, force, launch

Learning objective: the children will learn that their balloon rockets will need air(force) to move/launch

I would start the lesson by showing the children a video of Chris Hadfield launching a rocket into space. (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=jI5I23TPGMQ)

We will then discuss the video and discuss how we will get our paper rockets to launch/move.

I will then distribute a paper rocket for everyone to decorate. Once that task is completed we will distrubte straws and the children will get a chance to launch their rockets. They will notice that blowing harder or softer will have an affect on how far their rocket goes.

The children will be split into groups to have rocket races.

To conclude the children will dicuss how they got their rocket to move further/faster! They will dicuss how more air(force) makes the rocket move further/faster.

Love the idea of giving the children ownership of the experiments. Weve done this before in previous space weeks and its amazing what they come up with. They love learning from one another and love the idea of being “in charge”

Lesson: how do Animals keep warm in the Cold (Junior/Senior infants)

Learning objective: We will learn how animals keep warm in colder climates.

At the start of the lesson i will show the children two blocks of ice, i will question them as to how they stay warm going out to yard! They will say that they put on a coat. So i will ask them to predict what will happen with my two different ice cubes if i wrap one in clothes, hats and various other materials that we can find in the class. The class will predict that the one all wrapped up will melt but the one that isnt wrapped up will melt less. (We set a 40 min timer and move to next part of lesson)

I will then show the children pictures of a artic animals such as penguins and polar bears. I will then ask them how these animals stay warm in the cold artic weather. The children will give answers such as their fur, blubber, feathers etc all keep them warm .

Once the timer goes off we will observe what happened to the unwrapped ice cube. It melted in parts … then the big reveal…. we begin to unwrap the other ice cube, to everyones shock, the ice cube that is wrapped is barely melted at all!!!! We begin to investigate why this might be the case and why the other one melted.

            I ask questions such as;

Why did cube a melt so much?
What might have made it melt?
            Why didnt cube b melt?
            What does insulation mean?

We conclude the lesson by discussing how our coats keep us warm just like feathers and blubber does on animals and it act like a barrier to protect us fron the outside elements !!

Niamh, i love this lesson. I particularly like the designing of clothes for different seasons! I love seeing the different ways that science can be integrated with visual arts. Hands on activitIES always allow all types of learners to flourish and take part in a lesson. It also allows for meaning discussions between them on why they would or would not use certain things.

                  Set: Aliens and Space
                  Class: junior infants
(LITERACY AND VISUAL ARTS and science)

                  Lesson 1:

I would start the lesson off by reading the book: 10 little aliens.

I would then do a think, pair, share activity where the children discuss with their partner what they think an alien would look like. The pairs would then report back what their partner says.

As a class we would then discuss our body parts… eyes, ears, arms legs and how many of each we have. We would then discuss how we differ from what we imagine our aliens to look like.

                  Lesson 2: Creating clay aliens

We would revise what we dicussed in lesson 1 and talk about what we imagine our aliens to look like. The teacher would explain that they will be creating their owm aliens from clay. The teacher would show various objects and the children would brainstorm what they could be used for… pipe cleaners, cotton buds, googly eyes etc.

The children will get an oppprtunity to create their clay monster using clay and various other materials. At the end of the lesson each child will get a chance to introduce their alien to the class!

Love this alien lesson plan! There’s so much scope for developing their creative little minds!!! I love the idea of them imagining what an alien world looks like and how it would be different to our world! So much room for integration into other subjects…English, visual arts, geography!

                      ^wait for a sunny day

                      Senior Infants.

Once the weather is onside i would show the children a video of hands making various shapes with the shadows. I would ask the children how the shadows are being made . We would then proceed to go outside and see how our bodies have shawdows…with our 6th class buddies we would mark a spot to stand and trace around our shadows. After 2/3 hours we will go out again and stand in same spot. We will see what happened our shadows! We will discuss how or why our shadows moved and what might happen if we came out a few hours later again!

Discussing this with their buddies will further enhance their understanding and quest to figure out why or how our shadow moves depending on their position of the light source!

As a follow on activity, the children will pick a toy animal, their partner will hold a torch and they will trace around the animal!

Love this lesson Sarah and i love the idea of linking it with Visual art too! Also love the idea of asking them what they see in the moon…. this will allow for very creative answers , if i was to use this next year id use it as a think, pair and share activity! Im already excited to hear their answers!!

                            Inquiry based activity! SENIOR INFANTS

Oh no… there’s a water spillage by table 2… what will we do to sort this problem!

The teacher will get the children into pairs and they can discuss what their next steps will be!!

The teacher will ask each pair to report back to the class om what material they should use to sort the spillage. The teacher will make a list of all the suggestions!!

The pairs will then get a chance to see if their suggestion works… suggestions may include: toilet roll, hand towels, face cloth, tin foil, cling film. The teacher will encourage use of vocab like absorb, , better, worse etc. I think the hand towel works best because it absorbs the water, i wouldnt use the tin foil as it doesnt soak up any water.

In pairs the children will get a chance to see which material works best (before they start they will make a prediction on what materials they think will do the best or worst at absorbing the water!!)

Once everyone has had a turn wr will have a full class discussion on what material worked best at absorbing the water.
