For my 3rd Class, I would develop a project called “Stories of the Night”, inviting children to explore stories, legends, traditions and beliefs about night time from different cultures around the world. The project would provide an opportunity to celebrate the diverse backgrounds represented within the classroom while exploring a theme that is familiar and fascinating to all.
I would begin by asking the students what they think about when they hear the word “night”. They might suggest the Moon, stars, dreams, animals, darkness, Halloween or bedtime stories. We could then discuss how people in different cultures may have developed stories and traditions to explain or make sense of the night.
Each child could be invited to bring a story, legend, tradition or piece of folklore connected to their family or cultural background. For example, children could ask parents, grandparents or relatives to share a nighttime story that has been passed down through their family. Children who do not have a family story could choose a story from another country or culture that interests them. This would ensure that everyone can participate.
The class could create a large “Night Around the World” map, placing each story on the country or region where it originated. Groups could then present their stories to the class through storytelling, drawings, puppets, drama or short performances. This would develop oral language, listening and presentation skills while encouraging children to appreciate different perspectives.
As a final class project, the class could create a “Stories of the Night” book or exhibition, containing illustrations, short retellings and information about the cultural origins of each story. Families could be invited into the school to share stories or listen to the children’s presentations. This could also be done as a podcast and shared with the school community.

There is such a wealth of stories within families in Ireland and the children would love sharing their learning with their older relatives. I would even branmch this out further and look at stories from other cultures and countires and compare them to Irish stories. It would be a great project.
I would explore biodiversity by encouraging children to investigate the variety of plants, insects, birds and other wildlife found in our local area. This would make the topic meaningful because the children would be studying the environment immediately around them rather than biodiversity as an abstract concept. We are also fortunate to have some great local forests nearby.
I would begin with a biodiversity hunt around the school grounds, where pupils work in small groups to identify different plants, insects, birds and habitats. They could use simple identification sheets or photographs and record their findings on a class biodiversity map. Students could compare areas such as grassy spaces, hedgerows, trees, flowerbeds and walls, discussing why different species might choose particular habitats. They could also look for signs of wildlife, such as nests, feathers, webs or insect activity, without disturbing living organisms.
I would then introduce light pollution and ask the children to consider how artificial light might affect the biodiversity they have discovered. For example, artificial light at night can affect nocturnal insects such as moths, as well as bats and other animals that rely on natural patterns of darkness. This could lead to questions such as: Where are the brightest areas around our school? Where are the darkest? Which animals might prefer each area?
As a hands-on investigation, the class could create a simple map showing light and biodiversity hotspots around the school. Pupils could compare areas with strong artificial lighting to darker areas and discuss whether lighting could influence where certain wildlife is found. Rather than suggesting that light pollution is the only cause of differences, I would encourage children to think about other factors such as food, shelter and habitat.
Finally, groups could design a “Wildlife-Friendly School at Night” plan, suggesting ways to reduce unnecessary lighting while maintaining safety. This could include switching off unused lights, using motion sensors and directing outdoor lights downwards.
Hi Patrick, I think it is an excellent idea using an animal that is already well-known by the children in your school. I think it makes the lesson more meaningful when they can see the negative impact on a creature they see every day on the way to school. I think I would also adopt this approach as it has a better chance of having a long-lasting impact on the students.
Light pollution would be an engaging topic for a 3rd class because it allows them to explore an environmental issue that they can observe in their own local area. In an urban, artificial light from streetlights, houses, shops, sports grounds and roads can make the night sky much brighter. This can reduce our ability to see stars and, importantly, can also affect local wildlife.
I would focus the lesson on how animals depend on natural patterns of light and darkness. For example, artificial light can affect nocturnal animals such as bats, moths and other insects, which may alter their feeding, movement and behaviour. Moths and other insects can be attracted to artificial lights, potentially making them easier prey for predators and disrupting their normal activities. Artificial lighting can therefore have an impact beyond what we can immediately see.
I would engage the children through a local light-pollution investigation. Working in small groups, pupils could walk around the school grounds during an appropriate supervised evening observation, or examine photographs of the area taken at night. They could record where artificial lights are found, what direction they shine and whether areas of darkness remain. They could then compare their observations with a simple map of the school or local area.
The class could investigate which areas might provide better habitats for wildlife and discuss ways to reduce unnecessary light pollution. Ideas could include turning off lights when they are not needed, using motion sensors, closing blinds or curtains, using outdoor lights that point downwards, and reducing excessive lighting around gardens and buildings.
To finish, pupils could design a “Wildlife-Friendly Lighting” poster or model for the school, explaining how small changes could help protect local wildlife while still keeping people safe. This would link Science and Geography with SPHE and Art while encouraging children to see themselves as active guardians of their local environment.
Hi Lyndsy, as a teacher working in a n area that used to be rural but no longer is, I fully agree with you. It would be important highlight the impact of new developments in the town and look at how it impacts local wildlife. The students could then look at how they could reduce light pollution in their locality. Finally, it would b great to try and compare the town with a more rural setting tand the impact of minimal light pollution on a different area.
As a 3rd class teacher, I would introduce the Moon through a practical, hands-on investigation that allows children to see and model how the Moon appears to change throughout its cycle.
The children could begin by keeping a simple Moon diary, recording the date, weather, approximate shape of the Moon and whether it appears to be waxing (getting more illuminated) or waning (getting less illuminated).
To make the lesson engaging, I would use Oreos to model the eight phases of the Moon. Each child could carefully twist an Oreo apart and use the cream to represent the illuminated part of the Moon. They could create and label New Moon, Waxing Crescent, First Quarter, Waxing Gibbous, Full Moon, Waning Gibbous, Last Quarter and Waning Crescent. This would give pupils a memorable visual representation while encouraging discussion about the difference between waxing and waning.
I would link the activity to October 2026 and Halloween. The full Moon occurs on 26 October 2026 making the days around the full Moon particularly suitable for discussing Halloween folklore. The class could create spooky Moon artwork, designing haunted landscapes under a full Moon, and write short spooky stories inspired by the Moon. This could link Science with English, Art and Drama while allowing children to explore the Moon through observation, creativity and play.-

Hi Patrick, I love the idea of using technology to enhance the lesson. I really like the idea of using Padlet to upload information. This could become a great reference point for the students and can added to throughout the topic. It would also be a great way to show how the classes knowledgeable on the topic has expanded throughout the course of the unit. Finally, I love the idea of presentations as it makes the children work on another type of key skills and not just computer literacy.
For this lesson, I would engage the children through an enquiry-based, hands-on approach, working in small groups. I would begin by asking how people told the time before clocks existed and what they think a sundial needs to work. Pupils would then explore the school grounds observing where sunlight and shadows fall throughout the day and discussing where a sundial could be placed.
The children would construct a simple sundial using materials such as card, a stick and a paper plate, following a step-by-step demonstration. They would record the position and length of the shadow at different times, making predictions and looking for patterns. An ideal location would be the school garden where the sundial could be placed without interfering with other areas of the school.
This activity provides clear links to Maths as pupils would measure shadow lengths, compare distances, estimate measurements and record results in tables or simple graphs. They could also use mathematical language relating to position, direction, length and time.
There is also a strong Science link to living things. Pupils could discuss how plants in the vegetable garden need sunlight to grow and consider how the movement of the sun affects both the plants and the sundial’s shadow.
For art, pupils could design and decorate their sundials, using colour, patterns and symbols while ensuring that their designs remain functional.Hi Sean, I love your lesson idea. If I was to carry out your plan, I’d also extend it into art and have a shadows based art lesson to wrap up the unit of work. Thanks for sharing!
Hi Elaine, this is a great question. I really like the integration of Maths with the activity. It is also related to the children’s lives and gets them involved in a hands-on manner.
Research Question: How can we improve biodiversity in our school?
I think it is vital that students (particularly those in the senior classes) have ownership of the questions and the investigation. This would ensure that students are engaged and eager to work on the project as they have a sense of ownership. To spark pupil engagement, I would begin with thought-provoking questions and use visuals—such as maps, photos, and videos. I would then switch from the global perspective to a more localised view to make the project more meaningful to them. Looking at biodiversity in the school would be very interesting. The students would explore what is causing the decline in their local area, ways to foster greater biodiversity. These could be applied in the school. If successful, the class could then forward their ideas to the local county council and try to make meaningful change in their locality. The could also create home link to encourage families to be more eco-friendly and create greater awareness around biodiversity and the impact their actions has on local wildlife.
Hi Andy, very interesting that Starlink is such a prominent satellite over Ireland. I like the idea of getting the children to investigate to develop higher order thinking skills – this would make a great group task. Having seen so many ideas of how we use satellites, it would great to add the historical concepts and compare and contrast mapping vs GPS etc. Classes could look at how communication has been transformed because of satellites.

In the classroom, I would use the EO Browser to support cross-curricular STEM learning. Students could examine satellite images, identify environmental changes, and present their findings through discussions, written reports, or multimedia presentations. This promotes key STEM skills such as scientific observation, digital literacy, and data interpretation. It also encourages critical thinking as students use real-world evidence to draw conclusions about the effects of climate change on people, places, and ecosystems. I will also be using the materials on Ireland’s Action Plan as I think this is one of the most relevant aspects of the module. The students can look at their local area, their impact and what Ireland is trying to achieve and if Ireland is on track or not.
