I love the idea of watching the weather segment on New 2 Day and I would love to use that in my classroom next year.
After downloading the Teacher Guide & Pupil Activities for the ESA Resource ‘Nose High Up in The Sky, I participated in the activities I found that it was a great resource as I enjoyed the activities so I know my students will love the activities too. This resource will be a huge asset to me when teaching about weather and climate. The hands on activities are clear and child-friendly and I have 4th class in September and I feel they will respond really well to the activities. Especially the weather proverbs activities as this will generate whole class discussion and the students can talk to their parents and grandparents about this topic. I would still use “red sky at night, shepherds delight, red sky in the morning, shepherds warning’. In the website mentioned in the modules, they had sailors instead of shepherd which I never heard before which I found interesting.
Your research question on how plants grow and survive in different areas- Does climate change affect plant life sounds like a fantastic idea.
Firstly, the Climate Detectives research question planner is a clear, colourful and child-friendly tool to guide/help develop a research questions in relation to climate issues. I have 4th class again this September and I have always found working in groups of 3 or 4 for a big project is a nice idea to learning how to work co-operatively and collaboratively, instead of an independent project/study which can be difficult at times. An idea I might suggest was the question for one group could be “ What causes climate change?” which is a broad question but then continue this by giving each student in the group a topic to cover, for example:
1. Burning fossil fuels
2. Farming
3. Deforestation
By giving each student in the group their own topic to cover, they learn independent investigation and then when they have gathered their information through books/the internet they present what they have discovered to their group. This give opportunity for all the students to learn from one another.I think the idea of a debate sounds super to generate class discussions.
In module 3, ‘Home’ is an informative documentary film by Yann Arthus-Bertrand that shows Earth’s beauty. The documentary film highlights critical issues related to the environment and climate change. I feel this would be suitable for the senior classes and could be shown over a number of days/weeks. The class would be captivated by the clips. Through watching this documentary film the class will understand how all living beings on Earth are interconnected and how humans have effected the planet. This will generate paired/whole class discussions what urgent changes need to be made. Class projects, discussions, activities all around the topic would enhance the pupil’s interests and knowledge.
The Greta Thunberg TED Talk video would be inspiring for the class as it highlights children have a say and have a voice which can be very empowering for the young students. But I feel the topic of eco-anxiety needs to be considered for the class.I love the idea of doing a large project!
In activity 3: ‘Climate Reporters’, I would start the lesson by brainstorming with the class or using Think, Pair, Share as it gives opportunity for the students to work in pairs in this discussion about greenhouse gases and climate change. The class could use the school iPads in pairs or small groups to do their own research on climate. I would continue the lesson by showing the Paxi video. The Paxi video would be very age appropriate for my 4th class that I will have in September. The Paxi video in this activity would be a great tool to enhance the students understanding and knowledge. The Paxi video is a visual, clear and informative video that the class can understand and the video could generate whole class discussion. I would then move onto the Teal simulation tool.
I feel the David Attenborough documentaries would also be very beneficial to enhance the lesson.

I found that there was a variety of valuable and useful ideas/resources that I will have great use for in my classroom from Module 1- Weather and Climate.
Weather v Climate lesson will provide great opportunity for class discussion as an introductory lesson and it will be enable the class to work in pairs/small groups. The videos will be fantastic tool to use with my class in September.
Weather Detectives activity integrates really well with the Maths curriculum as the class will be recording and plotting their results on a graph.
All these activities/lessons/ideas are pitched well for the class I will be having in September, which is fourth class and I’m looking forward to teaching the lessons.
After reviewing the paper ‘Unravelling STEM: Beyond the acronym of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics’, I found there was a numerous STEM ideas that I can use in my teaching. Through the use active learning and collaborative learning the class can successfully access the learning and learn from one another.
