      I really like the idea of creating a mind map before the activity, as it would help children organise their ideas. It’s a lovely way to combine creativity with learning about the importance of protecting the night sky and the environment.

        After reading this module, I realised there are so many creative ways to help children learn about the night sky. I particularly liked the idea of designing a Dark Sky place because it combines Science, Art and creativity while encouraging children to think about the importance of protecting our environment.

        I would begin by showing the class photographs of Dark Sky places and discussing what makes them different from brightly lit areas. We would talk about why dark skies are important for people, wildlife and our environment. The children could then work in small groups to design their own Dark Sky place. They could include features such as limited outdoor lighting, green spaces, walking trails and habitats for nocturnal animals like bats and hedgehogs. They could label their designs and explain why they included each feature.

        To finish the project, each group could present their design to the class and explain how it helps protect the night sky. This would encourage discussion and allow the children to compare their ideas. I think this would be a very engaging activity because it gives pupils the opportunity to be creative while also developing their understanding of sustainability and biodiversity. It also links well with Science, Geography, Art and SPHE and encourages children to think about how small changes can have a positive impact on the environment.

          I really like how you’ve focused on practical actions the school can take, especially involving the local community. Planting night-scented flowers and adding bat boxes are lovely ideas that give children a real sense of contributing to biodiversity.

            Before completing this module, I hadn’t really thought about how artificial light at night could affect wildlife. It made me realise that something as simple as leaving unnecessary lights on can have an impact on animals that rely on darkness to find food, move around and stay safe. I think this is a really interesting topic to explore with primary pupils because it helps them see the connection between their local environment and the wider world.

            I would begin by taking the class on a nature walk around the school grounds or a nearby green area. The children could identify different plants, birds and insects and discuss where these living things might live. Back in the classroom, we would talk about which animals are active during the day and which come out at night. This would naturally lead into a discussion about how bright lights can affect nocturnal animals such as bats, moths and hedgehogs.

            As a follow-up activity, the children could work in groups to come up with ways our school could become more wildlife-friendly. They might suggest turning off unnecessary outdoor lights, planting pollinator-friendly flowers or creating quiet areas for wildlife. I think this would be an engaging lesson because it encourages children to observe nature, work together and realise that even small actions can help protect biodiversity. It also creates meaningful links with Science, Geography and SPHE while developing children’s awareness of environmental issues.

              I really like your idea of comparing the city and countryside skies as it’s such a simple way for children to understand light pollution. The poster activity is a lovely way to help them share what they’ve learned and encourage others to think about protecting the night sky.

                Living in Kilkenny, I have noticed that it can be difficult to see many stars at night, particularly in areas close to the town where there are lots of streetlights, shops and housing estates. While light is important for safety, excessive artificial lighting can make it much harder to appreciate the night sky and can also affect wildlife such as birds and insects.

                To explore this with my class, I would begin by asking the children what they notice when they look up at the sky at night. Some may have visited more rural areas where they could see many more stars, while others may only have experienced the night sky from their own homes. This discussion would help activate their prior knowledge and encourage them to share their own experiences.

                Next, I would show photographs of the night sky from different locations and ask the children to compare what they see. We would discuss why some places have brighter skies than others and introduce the term “light pollution” in a simple, child-friendly way.

                As a follow-up activity, I would encourage pupils to observe the night sky from home with the help of a family member. They could record how many stars they are able to see, whether they noticed the Moon or any constellations, and describe how bright their local area was. The children could then bring their observations back to class and compare their findings. This would provide a meaningful opportunity to discuss how different environments affect our view of the night sky.

                To finish, we would brainstorm simple ways to reduce unnecessary light pollution, such as turning off lights when they are not needed or using outdoor lighting responsibly. I think this topic would be very engaging for primary pupils as it connects science with their everyday lives and encourages them to become more aware of the environment around them.

                  I like how you’ve included families in the activity, as it gives the children a chance to apply their learning outside the classroom. Using Stellarium is also a great way to help them visualise where the planets can be found before they go looking.

                    I would choose to plan an observation of the Moon with my class. I would begin by asking the children what they already know about the Moon and whether they have ever noticed that it looks different from one night to the next. I would explain that the Moon goes through different phases and that some phases are easier to observe than others.
                    I would show the class a Moon phase calendar and identify the dates when the Moon would be visible in the morning before school. We could discuss why these phases are best for observing and make predictions about what we expect to see.
                    If weather permitted, I would bring the class outside to observe the Moon and encourage them to describe its shape, colour and position in the sky. The children could record their observations through labelled drawings and short written descriptions in their science journals.
                    To extend the activity, I would ask the children to observe the Moon at home over several days with a family member and compare any changes they notice. We could then share our observations in class and create a timeline of the Moon’s phases, helping the children to develop their observation skills and a better understanding of how the Moon changes over time.

                      I really like how you’ve scaffolded the lesson by exploring shadows before introducing sundials. Using iPads to research the history of sundials is a great way to integrate technology while keeping the activity engaging and hands-on.

                        The students could take part in an investigation to observe and record the position of the sun at different times throughout the school day. Before going outside, they could make predictions about where they think the sun will be in the morning, at midday, and in the afternoon. They could then return to the same spot in the school yard at set times to observe the sun’s position and record their findings through drawings, notes, or photographs.
                        The students could also observe the shadow of a fixed object, such as a flagpole or a cone, and measure how its length and direction change during the day. They could compare their results with their original predictions and discuss why these changes occur. The class could record their observations in a table before creating a simple graph to identify patterns, linking the activity with the Maths curriculum.
                        To extend the activity, the students could work in groups to design a simple observation station or create a class display showing the movement of the sun across the sky. They could also compare their findings with observations made on another day to see if the sun follows a similar path. This activity could encourage students to develop their observation, recording, and teamwork skills while gaining a better understanding of the Earth’s rotation and how it affects the apparent movement of the sun.

                            I think Activity 3 does a great job helping pupils understand how our actions affect the Earth’s temperature. The Paxi video is fun and clear, and it explains the greenhouse effect in a way younger children can really grasp. I like that it can be used more than once, either to introduce the topic or to review it later on. The temperature prediction tool is especially useful because it lets pupils experiment and see what happens when emissions go up or down. It makes climate change feel less abstract and shows that human choices matter. In my class, I would extend this activity by having pupils think of small actions they can take at school or at home to help the planet. They could share ideas in groups, create simple drawings or posters, and explain them to the class. This would help them link the science to real life.

                                I like this question. It is nice to link these projects to things close to the children our about their lives so I can see students engaging heavily with this.

                                  Research question: Are there fewer rainy days now than when our parents were kids?

                                  I would begin by asking pupils how rain affects their day, like walking to school in boots, playing football on muddy grass or seeing puddles for jumping. We would collect clues by marking rainy days on a class calendar, then ask parents or grandparents what the weather was like when they were young. Pupils could draw pictures of rainy day fun now compared to the past. I would tell them they are climate detectives finding out if the weather is changing in a way we can feel in everyday life. Small groups could share their ideas and stories, then we would put it all together to see what we have learned. Finally, we would share it with another class or in assembly to help everyone see how weather changes are connected to our own playgrounds, clothes and games. This makes climate science feel real and easy to understand.
