This is a fantastic integrated activity
To help my students observe and record the sun’s positions, I will start by introducing the concepts of sunrise, noon, and sunset, and explain how the sun’s path changes throughout the day. I’ll give them notebooks, pencils, and a compass or a sun position app for accurate observations. I will schedule times for us to observe the sun at sunrise, noon, and sunset, guiding them to note the time and draw the sun’s position relative to landmarks. I’ll encourage them to look for patterns, like the sun rising in the east and setting in the west, and to think about how the sun’s path changes with the seasons. Finally, I will lead a class discussion where we will share our findings and reflect on how the sun’s position shifts throughout the day and the year. This hands-on activity will help my students develop their observation skills and critical thinking.

To plan for observing the Moon in the morning from school, I will focus on the Last Quarter phase, which is visible from midnight to noon. During this phase, the Moon rises around midnight and is high in the sky in the morning, making it ideal for observations before school starts. I did some research and noted that in the 2024-2025 school year, the Last Quarter Moon falls on the following dates: September 8, 2024, October 8, 2024, November 6, 2024, December 6, 2024, January 4, 2025, February 3, 2025, March 4, 2025, April 3, 2025, May 2, 2025, June 1, 2025, June 30, 2025 and July 30, 2025. I will schedule morning observation sessions on these dates, providing students with notebooks and binoculars to record the Moon’s position, appearance, and any notable features. 3. Light pollution significantly impacts our local area by obscuring the night sky, disrupting ecosystems, and affecting human health. The excessive and misdirected artificial lighting makes it difficult to observe stars and planets, hindering astronomical activities and diminishing our connection to the natural night environment. This artificial brightness also disrupts nocturnal wildlife, altering their behaviors and habitats. To engage my learners in exploring this issue, I will organize night-time observation sessions and have them compare visibility in areas with different levels of light pollution. Students will use light meters to measure and record light levels, noting the effects on visibility and the environment. I will also arrange guest talks with local astronomers and environmentalists to provide expert insights. Finally, students will participate in a community awareness project, creating presentations or posters to educate others about light pollution and advocate for responsible lighting practices. This hands-on approach will foster a deeper understanding and proactive attitude towards mitigating light pollution
To explore biodiversity I would start with nature walks in nearby parks, using magnifying glasses and field guides to help students document different plants, insects, and animals. They keep nature journals filled with drawings and notes. To address light pollution, we conduct night-time observations, teaching students about nocturnal wildlife and how artificial lights disrupt their natural behaviors. Experiments demonstrating light’s impact on insects or plants make the learning hands-on. Guest speakers, such as local biologists, add depth to our exploration. Combining these activities, students gain a profound understanding of their local ecosystem and the importance of preserving natural habitats. This immersive approach not only educates but also fosters a lasting appreciation for the environment.

Show them the painting and ask them to imagine how a similar scene would look today with city lights. This can lead to a conversation about how artificial lighting affects our view of stars and disrupts nocturnal wildlife, bridging art and science in an engaging, visual way. I could play “A Sky Full of Stars” by Coldplay to spark children’s curiosity about the night sky. Discuss the lyrics, emphasizing the beauty and wonder of stars. Follow with an activity, identifying constellations and planets. Connect the song’s imagery to real-life observations, teaching about light pollution’s impact on our view of the stars. This blend of music and science will engage students and enhance their appreciation for the night sky.

Seafood is rich in essential nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins D and B2, and minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, iron, zinc, iodine, magnesium, and potassium. By teaching my students about these nutritional benefits, I can help them understand the importance of a balanced diet and how seafood contributes to overall health.

Using the video published by ARC I could teach my class an introductory lesson about what exactly aquaculture is and how it is used in our country. We could begin by brainstorming exactly what the children know about aquaculture and use the video as a tool to teach them exactly what aquaculture is. I would show them that aquaculture in Ireland is like farming, but instead of growing plants or raising animals on land, we farm fish and shellfish in the water. Also that, we have clean, cold waters that are perfect for raising salmon, mussels, and oysters. I would communicate that these farms help provide food for people and create jobs for coastal communities. The video is entertaining and would do a great job at communicating these messages to the children. The summary quiz provided by ARC would do a fantastic job at assessing the children’s knowledge of the subject and content provided in the video.
