I will be working with a child in second class who has just received his sanction letter for assistive technology. I ordered it today actually so I have based my Sway on a lesson I will do with him in September.
I have enjoyed reviewing the paper @Redesigning Education: Meeting the Challenges of the 21st Century’. I have downloaded it and have up;loaded it to our OneDrive. I have printed it out too and highlighted lots.
It makes so much sense. Our students are learning in a different world to what we were educated in and have grown up in. My former Principal used to say that the jobs for the children we are teaching are not even invented yet and he would also say that pencils will be in museums in years to come.
I’m blessed to be in a school that has been and is moving with the times. We have a computer room and it’s one room I always plead with Principals to keep. Space in all schools is hard to come by but in this 21st century this room is more and more invaluable. To be able to go into that room with a group and connect my laptop to project on the board is fantastic.
I think that developing critical thinking for example is essential in this day and age where media is at our fingertips. It’s so important for our students to understand that- it is not always a reliable and dependable source.
It’s so important for our children to be confident in giving their point of view and expressing it confidently and being able to back it up.
One new online tool I used during Summer Programme this year was Mentimeter. I tried it out with the Senior mainstream class. They had 3 questions and i explained that spellings didn’t matter and that it was anonymus.
1. What was your favourite activity?
2. What was your least favourite activity?
3. Have you any suggestions for Summer Programme 2024?
We did it in the computer room.
They loved seeing their answers pop up anonymously. I was sable to save their answers and print them out which was great afterwards when sitting down with the Principal, Summer Programme manager.
We used a modern approach which took the stress and challenge of writing out of it enabling the children to be truly honest.
It was my first time too to use Google Forms and again I went with simple questions for the parents/guardians to carry out a Post Summer Programme Questionnaire.
To be able to do this in a paper free format as we are a Green School and to get that feedback in a pie chart etc was just brilliant.
These are just two small steps I took to use 21st century skills with the children and parents and the response was just great. It wasn’t off putting.
We are in an ever changing world. I think that our children need to leave 6th class as proficient touch-typists. It’s an essential tool going into secondary school. Word Processing Skills, PowerPoint and photo story type skills are all part of 21st century skills. I see my own daughter working on CBAs using PowerPoint and she was very lucky to leave primary School confident in PowerPoint as she attended Computer camp in her school after school. She also did TTRS daily at home in 6th class and she went into her secondary school having completed the TTRS course.
Digital technology needs to be a central component and not an add on like in the past. It’s another form of literacy in this day and age to be computer literate.
The main thing for us as teachers is not to be frightened by it.

I am working in SET and I am also our Assistive Technology (AT) co- Ordinator. The AT part happened organically as I upskilled in the area due to my passion for SET. Along my journey in SET I had to apply for assistive technology for pupils and I experienced it personally with my daughter. I understand how essential AT is for students especially those with dyspraxia for example specifically those with difficulty in the area of Motor Planning. I will continue to use digital technology to enhance my students’ learning. In 2022 2023 I had two AT groups back to back on Monday and Tuesday afternoons when the Junior classes went home.
One group was a junior AT group with children from 2nd and 3rd classes. The other group was a senior group of 4thclass children.
The year before last I worked with a very unique cohort of 8 children who had Irish exemptions so that time was given to developing their file management, Word Processing skills, PowerPoint and typing skills. We started off each session with ten minutes of touch type read and spell (TTRS) and then a skill and application per session. We finished off with tables. These children are now going into 6th class and I am going to put this course to use with them from September. I will teach them Sway to help them with their projects. This will be so useful in secondary school.
By developing my own use of Digital Technology for example doing this summer course I am learning new skills and I will pass these new skills onto my 6th class children with AT.
Also I will collaborate with another member of staff and post holder to work on our Digital Plan going forward. I look forward to bringing together other members of staff with strengths and interests in various aspects of IT to set up a Digital Team.
1. I can apply school Self Evaluation Guidelines to my own teaching by identifying a focus for example Sway for the first term.2. I will gather evidence.
3. I will analyse and make judgments.
4. I will write and share a report with the staff. I will carry out a Mentimetre survey with the children learning Sway to learn about their learning experiences. I will carry out a google forms survey with the class teachers teaching the children and their parents.

Hopefully this link will work as OneNote is all new to me bar what my daughter had told me about it. She told me I’d love it as a teacher and she was right. This course is excellent.t3rd class Word Processing Skills 2023 2024 the full functionality of OneNote I had to open it in the desktop app.
3rd class Word Processing Skills 2023 2024
OneNote would be brilliant for any teacher going on Parental Leave for example. I find that my role is so varied in SET it’s so hard when it comes to any type of leave but preparation via OneNote would make things much easier from a substitute accessing work etc..
I thoroughly enjoyed the Microsoft Education Centre 12 units on this. Very informative and user friendly for someone’s very first time.
I liked the way it is described as the digital 3-ring binder or Swiss Army Knife of notetaking.
It caters to all notetaking styles, learning and organisational styles.
Children with assistive technology sanctioned would love this way of note taking. I could see myself using this with my very competent assistive technology group going into 6th class.
I like the way the children can learn long after class time is over. I think it’s brilliant for secondary school.
As the Microsoft Education Centre states ‘it’s an infinite canvas’ that lets you expand and revisit, add notes as you need. It can be typed or handwritten.
I like how students can’t see anyone else’s notes.
The collaboration space in 5th and 6th class would be great for brainstorming, group projects and I like the idea of the class glossary.
I found thee online guide excellent. The videos made it look so straightforward. Immersive reader is going to transform so many school lives. It really will level the playing field. The personalisation features eg translating into another language will be invaluable to us as we have 49 children from Ukraine in our school. This will be a game changer using i Pads up the Senior end of our school.
As I said earlier it’s all new to me but that’s why I chose this course. I wanted to learn how to move things on for my Senior end children with assistive technology in order to prepare them for secondary school.
August 4, 2023 at 11:11 am in reply to: Module 2 – Office 365 Tools to help support Collaboration #202919Hi, I’m having difficulty finding the ‘Recording’ option.
I have inserted the beginnings of my PowerPoint. I have just recently finished being organiser for Summer Programme so did a few slides about that , which I could use to explain it next year. I used the ‘Reading coach’ aspect to it when I couldn’t find the ‘recording’ part. I can see great learning opportunities with this.
In our school we are on the cusp of 365 with our older children who have been sanctioned assistive technology. We have a unique cohort of 8 children in 5th going into 6th class who during their Irish exemption time in 4th spent that time doing TTRS for their typing and literacy along with learning Word Processing skills and Powerpoint. We also spent time learning how to MindMap.
Going forward now in 6th class I look forward to using 365 with them as this will prepare them for secondary school.
Teams I can see as a great Sharing Department for our school in the future. It will be excellent for sharing classroom resources. Yes it will have it’s challenges as it could appear daunting to some staff members but if we took this step by step at Croke Park hours we could introduce aspects bit by bit without overwhelming staff members.
Teams is such a great hub for teamwork and collaboration. One could have a Department Team eg SET Team and a class team for example. I can see huge potential there for middle management with the Professional Learning Community aspect.
I think the Teams Assignments is great for secondary school where the students can access feedback. We are in a DEIS rural school so not as much opportunity for that in our Primary school.
My daughter loves Teams. She is going into third year and her school is an iPad school so no school books in the schoolbags. The books are at home. She loves getting her Teams feedback and grades.
Teams is a great way to host external speakers for Croke Park hours for example.
Teams would be great with the 6th class children in preparing them for secondary school. It would be an effective tool to keep assignments together and create a digital portfolio.
I really like the Learning Accelerators. I think in time and with training Teams will become an invaluable tool for efficient resource management.
I love the Reading Coach and can see huge potential there especially in SET.
Immersive Reader has massive potential too. A child could do their ten minutes reading for example and a reading report is generated.
Reading Progress again could be used in an SET setting to track reading fluency.
I wouldn’t have known about the Microsoft Education Center before this course. I’m loving the tutorials in it.
I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the first module.
MS Forms:
I see lots of potential for this in school. I have recently just being organiser for our Summer Programme for the first time and I used Google forms for a Post Summer Programme questionnaire for the parents but I could use Microsoft forms in school with the children in advance of Summer Programme next year in the computer room. I could see myself doing a pre summer programme questionnaire.
It would be super for self-assessment.
Options like Summer Programme to include the childrens’ voice.
With being a newly DEIS rural school status I see great potential for DEIS surveys.
Also with so many children with assistive technology in our school it would work great as part of their computers skillset.
Sway:
I see huge potential for Sway in my school. I coordinate the assistive technology in our school. We currently have 17 children with devices.
Sway is super it’s ideal for viewing on any screen be it a laptop or an iPad.
It allows the students to show their learning in a style that is a strength.
It’s also a great way to show what’s happening in class or around school.
Great for a class newsletter.
Could be used after a school tour if the teacher uploaded photos to One Drive.
