Our school puts alot of effort into science week with guest speakers coming into the classroom, science fairs, regular science breaks in the class etc.
One thing I always did was during eating time I would play Chris Hadfield the Astronaut that makes videos from space. These are fun snippets that showcase regular things being done in space.
I think out of all the Activity Set shown I would like to incorporate – Rockets
I would Read the book Smeds and Smoos to introduce the concept of space exploration and rockets. I would show videos of Chris Hadfield in space. I would show pictures of different types of rockets.Showing two different rocket designs I would ask the children which rocket design they think will work better and why. Which rocket will go the farthest? would divide the children into groups with a list of the same items to build a rocket e.g. Pringles can, milk carton, sellotape.
I would get each group to predict which rocket design they think will fly higher or farther. I would ask the students if they had to change one thing what would that be?
I love the use of role play in a lesson. I think it turns the learning back on the child and they have to use prior knowledge to play the role they are in
Hands on classroom theme and activity: The Weather and What to wear
Stimulus: A Stroll through the seasons.
Resources: Bag full of clothes appropriate for all different weather and seasons.
Introduction: Read the book about seasons. Elicit prior knowledge about seasons and the weather. ask the students to put four pictures of different seasons to the correct season.
Main body of the lesson:
Put masking tape in a cross on the floor. Label each section Spring, Summer, Autumn , Winter. Each student comes up to the bag of clothes and with a blind fold must select an item of clothing from the bag. Before removing the blind fold they must feel and discuss the item of clothing and make a prediction of where it should be placed on the seasons section.
Remove the blind fold to discover if they are correct.
Students role play a short drama about the season given. Other classmates have to guess the season.
Hi Orla,
I love the idea of your lesson for EAL students. I was in learning support last year and I believe this would have been a very suitable lesson for my EAL students and the students i took out for the younger end of the school.
Aliens and Space
Junior end of the school.
Introduction: Elicit prior knowledge of space and Aliens.
Stimulus: The Smeds and The Smoos by Julia Donaldson.
Using my space projector, I would darken the classroom and turn on the projector of the solar system. I would ask the students to get into a comfy position. I would read the story aloud. I would ask the students questions based the book I read and about the image they have of the aliens.
Drama : Imagine you were one of the aliens in the book. I would like you to act out a scene in groups to show how an alien would handle 1) going to school 2) going swimming 3) going to the hospital 4) going food shopping.
Art lesson: using clay we would create what we think the aliens look like and present to the class.
Finally show the students the aliens in the story.
I love how you integrate the lesson across all the curriculum areas. I find art is a great way to finish off a subject and leaves a lasting memory. The kahoot quiz would add great enjoyment to a topic.
Hi KAtie Jo,
I really enjoyed the simplicity yet effective lesson you have planned. It gets their imaginations running. Incorporating art is a nice way to learn and then to be able to show the finished products off.
Activity: The Sun and the Shadows
The Human Sun Dial:
Ensure you have sufficient time to visit the school yard three times without other classes there. Pair up students- shadow maker and shadow finder.
Start in the morning- Prior to the lesson draw out enough boxes for the shadow makers to stand in with their names.
Using the chalk, have the Shadow Finder outline the shadow of the Shadow Maker. Write the time of day it was made.
Repeat the shadow tracing at least twice more it is important that all your data iis recorded n a notebook.
The same can be done within the classroom using a small object. again using a sticker, place the object on the sticker . three times during the day mark where the shadow of the object is. Post experiment, speak with students and ask them is their a pattern. Ask them what they think would happen tomorrow if they did the same experiment.
Hello, my name is Ciara O Malley. I am currently on maternity leave but prior to this i was teaching 5th class. I like the space fact thatOn Mercury a day is twice as long as a year.
Prior to the inquiry based lesson to be thought about the size of planets the students would need to be familiar to the name and order of the planets in the solar system. I will assess this by using a KWLchart. The lesson would be introduced to the students by asking the students to line themselves up from tallest to shortest. Introduce the lesson by stating that we are going to put the planets in order from smallest to biggest using fruit. Watching the video on You~Tube students will be shown what fruit represents the planet. Students will math the planet to the corrrect fruit. Once completed they will put in order from smallest to biggest.
Hi Louise,
I think your lesson is simple yet fun and there is a clear learning objective. There is alos a great channel on YouTube that could be used to introduce the lesson and gather excitement and momentum to the lesson.
