Create a short teaching resource using Stellarium/ WorldWide Telescope

Set on all iPads a picture of the night sky with lots of stars to begin to prompt thinking. (They love when the backgrounds are changed). A KWL chart with the children using the night sky image as a stimulus. What do you know about the stars/ planets? Can you name some of the planets/ stars? Do you know what astronomers do?

Show them on the interactive whiteboard Stellarium. Model having a checklist and how to find each item. Give them an individual checklist with 4 items to find. One child is the researcher touching the iPad while the other is the recorder and responsible for writing down information they have found out. These roles are switched after each find. They will both then present their recordings to the class on the new information they have found. After the lesson, the children will write an exit ticket of one piece of information they have learned. Stick these exit tickets on KWL chart

I really like your idea of prompting the lesson with looking into the past and discussing the need for sundials in years gone by. Also how lovely to encourage the children to predict where they think the next mark would be

          2. Construct a sundial in your immediate area or plan for your school grounds to see where a sundial could be placed

The children in my class love drawing on our yard. They were also facinated with a unit of work we did last year on hand shapes making different shadows using their hands. In September, We would start with a KWL on shadows/ light. I would invite them to choose a small animal and draw around it. We will then come back outside a few hours later to check if our animals still fit in their shadow. We could then create one in the yard together. We will use chalk to mark the changes. We are getting markings put down in our yard this September so it might be an option to look at a human sundial marked out. From this learning then we will create a sundial in our class using paper. We would revisit the KWL chart.

Hi I love you idea for your lesson. I also find beginning the lesson with a KWL helps settle the learners and grounds the activity. They are great to reflect on at the end of the learning

Hello, the idea of having a checklist will lead to very clear expectations and clear ending to their time on Stellarium. It would lead to a nice positive sense of achievement when they ticked off those items. They could create a checklist for a friend in a following lesson

Thank you for sharing that resource of NASA’s Moon guide. The above dates give a wide scope of time for these activities to happen in school. It would be a lovely link with home to have a moon diary
