great ideas . some really lovely initiatives for green schools
This module has made me reflect on the different ways sustainability is already being practised in my local area of Lifford and throughout Co. Donegal. Living in an area with such close connections to rivers, farmland and the wider natural environment provides lots of opportunities to explore sustainability with my 3rd and 4th Class pupils. Simple practices such as recycling, reducing waste, reusing materials, conserving water and protecting local habitats are things that children can see and take part in every day.
I think it is important that pupils understand that sustainability is not just something we learn about in a textbook, but something that affects our everyday lives and our local community. I would encourage my pupils to investigate what is being done locally and identify areas where we could improve. They could carry out a waste audit in our classroom, investigate recycling habits in the school or explore how local farmers and businesses use sustainable practices.
I would also like to link this learning with our work on aquaculture by exploring how our rivers, lakes and coastline can be protected. This could encourage the children to think about how our actions today can affect the environment and communities in the future. I feel that giving pupils practical opportunities to make a difference, even in small ways, will help them develop a greater sense of responsibility for their local environment.
I found this module on the nutrition of seafood very interesting, particularly because it has made me think about how I could introduce the topic of healthy eating in a more practical and engaging way with my 3rd and 4th Class pupils. Before completing the module, I was aware that seafood was considered a healthy food, but I found it useful to learn more about the nutrients it provides, including protein, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins and minerals.
In the classroom, I could use this topic to explore the importance of having a balanced and varied diet. The children could investigate different types of seafood, identify the nutrients they provide and compare them with other foods. We could also discuss where our food comes from and make links to our previous learning about aquaculture and the Irish fishing industry.
I think this topic would work particularly well as a cross-curricular activity, linking Science, SPHE, Geography and Maths. Pupils could survey the foods they eat, create healthy meal ideas and present their findings. As a teacher in Lifford, Co. Donegal, I also like the opportunity to connect classroom learning with our wider coastal and marine environment. Overall, this module has shown me that seafood can be a useful and interesting context for teaching children about nutrition, healthy choices and sustainability.

I particularly like the idea of using real-life topics such as aquaculture to encourage children to investigate, ask questions, solve problems and work collaboratively. Rather than STEM being taught as separate subjects, I can see how it can be naturally integrated across Science, Maths, Geography and even English through discussion, research and presenting findings.
The resources have also made me think about STEM from a whole-school perspective. As part of the SSE process, I think our school could look at how confident both teachers and pupils are in STEM and identify areas where we could develop further. This could include sharing resources and ideas between classes, agreeing some common approaches to STEM activities and providing pupils with more opportunities for practical, problem-solving experiences.
As a teacher in Lifford, I feel there is also great potential to use our local environment and community as a starting point for STEM learning. This would make STEM more relevant and meaningful for my pupils while helping to develop curiosity, creativity, critical thinking and teamwork.

This module made me think more about the location of aquaculture farms around Ireland and the important role they can play in coastal communities. As a 3rd and 4th Class teacher in Co. Donegal, I am particularly interested in the opportunities aquaculture could provide for learning about our own county. Although Lifford is inland, Donegal has a long coastline and many coastal communities where fishing and marine-related industries are an important part of local life.
I was interested to learn how the location of aquaculture farms is influenced by factors such as water quality, sheltered waters and suitable environmental conditions. It also made me think about the wider socio-economic benefits. Aquaculture can provide employment and support local businesses and families, while also contributing to the economy of coastal communities.
I think this would be a great topic to explore with my pupils through Geography and Science. We could look at a map of Donegal, identify coastal communities and investigate how aquaculture and other marine industries support them. This would help children make a connection between what they learn in the classroom and the communities and environment around them.

I found this module particularly interesting because aquaculture provides a very real-life context for learning. Living in Donegal, my pupils are surrounded by rivers, lakes and the sea, so I think they would be naturally curious about how fish and other aquatic animals are farmed and how aquaculture connects to our local environment.
I can see lots of opportunities to use the tools and resources from this module in my classroom. For example, I could use videos, photographs and interactive activities to introduce the children to aquaculture and then link this to Science, Geography and SPHE. The children could investigate where our food comes from and compare wild fishing with fish farming.
I also think the idea of social licence could be introduced at an age-appropriate level by encouraging pupils to consider different opinions about aquaculture. They could discuss the benefits for food production and local communities, while also thinking about possible environmental concerns. This would help develop their questioning, critical-thinking and communication skills. Overall, I feel aquaculture could provide a very engaging way of connecting classroom learning with the world around my pupils.

They can witness sustainable practices firsthand and engage with practitioners to understand the challenges and benefits of implementing sustainable solutions.

I believe that using the interactive simulations and virtual labs from The ARC could really help bring complex STEM concepts to life for my students. By allowing them to explore and experiment in a hands-on way, I think it could make the material more engaging and easier to understand. I think that incorporating inquiry-based learning activities and project-based assessments from The ARC could really help my students develop their critical thinking and problem-solving skills. By encouraging them to ask questions, investigate solutions, and work collaboratively on projects, I believe it could help them become more confident and capable STEM learners. I found this module very interesting and the videos were beautiful to watch. I know the children in my class would find this topic very interesting. As most children come from an agricultural background in my school, I know they would love learning about aquaculture. By introducing students to concepts like Aquaculture and Social License, they can gain a deeper understanding of how their actions impact the environment and society. This can help them develop a sense of responsibility towards sustainable practices and ethical decision-making in their future endeavours. Students can use their understanding of Aquaculture and Social License to make informed choices about the seafood they consume, advocate for sustainable practices in their communities, and even pursue careers in industries that prioritize environmental and social responsibility. This knowledge can empower them to become active participants in creating a more sustainable and ethical world.
