Hi Jen,
Great idea to use more quizzes in Irish to assess their learning. Something the children will enjoy and will help give the teacher a viewpoint on the learning of each topic. I teach in a DEIS 1 school where a lot of the children can be under enthused about learning Irish. It is something we are addressing in school and trying to promote more spoken Irish in accordance with the curriculum. Quizzes like yours across the year group could help massively. Teachers could take it in turns to create.
My short interactive digital story using Google Slides is based around the topic of A Person I Admire.
https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1z1_Vuon1PD-uRQrRBNJlONFvX3lJcGPj_UtGq3w9KW0/edit?usp=sharing
For this topic I would talk to the class about a particular person I admire. In this case a Canadian named Terry Fox who ran across Canada with an amputated leg to help raise funds for cancer research. The slides would demonstrate to the children the standard that is expected of them. I have included a video that they will have to watch. After I will share a quiz with them on Google Classroom in which they have to answer questions based on the video. This will be done through Google Forms. The questions will range from multiple choice and open ended. Their next task will be to research a person they admire. I will share a Google Docs template in which they will have to fill out based on their chosen person. This will then form the basis for their Google Slides presentation.
Prior to using Google Workspace for Education this lesson would have been carried out on a laptop and then the children would have to create a poster. There would be little structure and guidance. However using the various tools available on Google Workspace the lesson has more scope for a blended approach. I can guide and direct the children. They can edit and review appropriately. The children will interact more and have more scope to display facts about their chosen person of admiration. Up until now I have only used the basics of Google Workspace but I look forward to using Drive, Forms, Slides, Meet, etc together to enhance lessons.
I have created a quiz based on the The Great Irish Famine.

I would use this quiz as an assessment tool for end of topic assessment. I have included a varied range of questions to suit all style of learners such as numeric questions and visual questions. I have included a video and an image. It would be aimed at 4th class children. These quizes can be shared across other classes within the year group. These quick quizzes on forms can be collated and inform future learning and planning.
From reviewing the paper “Redesigning Education: Meeting the Challenges of the 21st Century” it is clear education is rapidly evolving and advancing. As educators we need to stay in tune with modern advances in today’s technological and digital world. We must do this keeping in mind the skills needed for today’s world. The new Primary Curriculum Framework goes towards meeting these challenges and ensuring our students have the skills needed for the outside world.
The paper mentions critical skills needed. The skill I am choosing to focus on is “developing good people skills”. As we move onto learning through more digital technology as well as conversing through digital methods such as voice notes, emojis, memes, etc we must ensure children are able to converse effectively and positively with and without digital tools. We must also not lose the ability to converse one to one. That is why developing good interpersonal skills is vital for today’s environment.
Effective collaboration and being able to work in teams in the workplace is a skill that we can teach in school. As mentioned in the slideshow children need to be able to negotiate, resolve conflicts, reach agreement, distribute tasks, listen and integrate ideas within a group. Through planned group tasks and assignments using Google Workspace these can be achieved and worked on.
From reading the lesson plan on choosing a site for the 2030 Winter Olympics this lesson is ideal for teaching this specific skill and others. I loved how this lesson is cross curricular and has many layers to it. The children could use Google Docs, Slides, Drive and Drawing for their presentation and letter at the end.

July 26, 2023 at 3:12 pm in reply to: Module 2 – Introduction to Google Workspace & Classroom #200559I’m relatively new to Google Classroom. I used it for the first time at the tail end of the last school year. The benefits seemed enormous to me and I wanted to expand my knowledge so that is the reason I enrolled in this course. We didn’t use it during COVID but it is an excellent learning management tool that can be used in and out of school. A great tool for blended learning.
Setting groups up for collaboration is something I will definitely use in the forthcoming year. And as a means of differentiation using mixed ability groups and/or setting differentiated tasks individually or again for groups. There are loads of tools that can be incorporated into it with Google Slides, Docs, Drawing and Drive. The varied use of digital technology is the future of classroom blended learning. The assessment tools is one that intrigues me and how it can used as a whole school with rubics and formative/informative assessment. The video also explained the time saving benefit of sharing assignments amongst a year group and reusing old posts – a crucial time saving exercise.

One could use it to get to know the children in the class whilst introducing Google Classroom, Drive and Docs at the same time. It is interactive and engaging. This could be their personal logo for the school year and you could update it throughout the year to see how your interests, etc have changed. It could be printed and displayed within the classroom. The videos are very informative and the lesson is cross curricular bringing in SPHE, art, drawing and visual arts skills. The children would be engaged and they could even assess each other and recommend updates (2 stars and a wish, etc). There are many opportunities for collaboration and feedback. The teacher could upload it onto the school website to interact with parents. This will enhance the school goal of promoting the use of Digital Technology on a school level. Children will encourage their parents to look at their logo and how it represents them.
-
