Great question how often are we seeing the devastation caused by flooding in many areas around Ireland.
I think the vast majority of children would love to take part and become climate detectives
I think it would be good to keep it local and personal for our first venture into this. I like the idea of a whole school approach getting all pupils staff parents and members of the community if possible. We could take the question ,Has Climate Change impacted our school environment? If so can we show how and why this has happened.I work in a country school that has grown steadily over the past 20-30 years. To engage the pupils we could invite the previous principals of the school back to talk to the children about what school was like in their time. It was a 2 teacher school small building few students very low carbon footprint. We could have some past pupils involved too or parents of present pupils telling us about what school was like and the changes they can see. The school has seen many changes over the past number of years going from a staff of 2 to 22 and pupil numbers in the 30’s to nearly 150.The carbon footprint has certainly increased. Photos showing the original building and the developments since would be very benefical…..trees cut down school 6 times as big as original build….car park…..etc. Impact that cutting trees down and clearing hedgerows have had. The increase in cars school buses traffic have all had an impact where children were able to walk or cycle years ago its too dangerous now and obviously not good for the environment.
There are lots of avenues to be explored here by different classes. What can we do as a whole school to make our environment a better place to make up for the increase in carbon footprint and contribution to climate change. We would look at the increase in rainfall over the last number of years .We have a field at the back of school which is waterlogged for many weeks over the course of the year affecting the childrens access at yard time.Research can we done using Nose up high in the Sky and the children using their own equipment like rain gauges to keep track of rainfall …find out about previous years and make predictions about the future.
Once data has been collected logged documented by children in project form videos films posters etc We could have a day in school where parents and grandparents can come in to see the childrens findings.
I could not get over how many Starlink satellites there are across the world . I can see hoe Astronomy Ireland refer to them as the vermin of the sky and not ” string of pearls moving across the night sky or train of bright lights” 🙂
I downloaded the Orbitrack App think it was €6.99.
Its very easy to use lots of little extras children would love it. I had no idea of the vast number of satellites its insane .I will definitely use it at night to spot and name satellites and see what their purpose is.
I have spent a bit of time checking out a few parts of the world and what satellites are going through there .Its great the way the app has all the info about each satellite at the touch of a button. The five satellites I tracked are underneath
1.OBJECT G not identified as a single satellite but an object released by a spaceplane during a mission. The spaceplane uses these objects to test its ability to rendezvous and perform proximity operations crucial for satellite servicing. Its from China.
2.Meteor- M2 3 is a Russian weather satellite launched on June 27 2023 on a Soyuz-2 rocket. It is designed for operational meteorology and transmitting images of Earth.
3.56 MICHAEL-FREICH SENTINEL-6 This satellite has been in orbit for over 4 years. It was designed to measure the height of the ocean helping to understand how Earths climate is changing.
4.OSCAR 15 is a satellite developed by the University of Surrey used for high resolution land observation and disaster monitoring.
5.SNAP 3 EDDIE is a 3U Cubesat part of the US army’s nano satellite programme . It was launched on October 8 2015.Its mission is to demonstrate beyond line of sight communication capabilities for tactical users, using software defined radios. Its very small and weighs only 5.5kg.

Lovely idea to use the score for a listen and draw lesson. Children could talk about their drawings / paintings describe how the music made them feel what colours they chose and why. Lots of room for creativity here.
I found this module to be a tough one. I think you would have to be careful as a teacher know your class and what would be appropriate for them to be exposed to.
The Greta Thunburg piece would be a good place to start. Seeing how passionate she is and how capable a speaker she is simply remarkable. Facts based straight talking no messing around. She tells us about the rich countries getting richer and no help to the poorer countries. She is a great role model a power house for both climate change and autism. She tells us we can change things which is a powerful positive message to end with.
The Climate Aid 2020 video was very powerful .David Attenborough’s voice the Mad World song the images of fires smoke destruction devastation made it a hard watch. The message” if we don’t protect nature we cant protect ourselves” is scary but true. Finishing with “we are running out of excuses and time” Its definitely one for older classes. The images of the poor animals in the Australian fires would be a hard watch for the toughest person.
The film Home is another one for the older classes .It could be shown over two or three classes. The footage is amazing showing how beautiful but fragile our planet is. It offers a unique perspective of our ecosystems and the impact humans are having on them. It is a plea for us to look at what we are doing wrong and change our ways before we destroy our planet. The effects of the exploitation of our shared ecosystem will effect us all and will hit those who already face the toughest circumstances the hardest. I cant stop thinking about it the images the voice, the music, the message.
I think I would show the Irelands Climate Action Plan as it will show the children there are plans in place to try reverse damage done. Everyone has a role to play to achieve a climate neutral economy by 2050 having emissions by 2030.What are we doing in our schools and homes to play our part.

Hi Michelle
I like the idea of using the TEAL tool to compare Ireland with other areas in the world to further enhance their critical thinking. Why do some areas have less / more carbon emissions than others etc…
The Paxi video on greenhouse gases was simple yet effective. The concept of greenhouse gases can prove tricky so visually this video is ticking alot of boxes. Its just under 5 minutes and I think it would be appropriate to use with most classes.I like the way it offers simple ways we can all make changes in our lives to help our planet. There are other Paxi videos that would be useful visual aids in class.
The TEAL tool is a very good tool for visualizing and exploring climate data. Its very hands on and user friendly.Children could explore air temperature wind speed precipitation and solar radiation. It allows the opportunity to look back at data from the year 1950 and make predictions up to the year 2100.
It would be brilliant for each child to see that each one of them can make a vital
contribution to our climate solution. The Green schools committee or Climate committee could help organise events at school such as debates, poster designing ,slogans ,poetry, story writing etc children themselves should be involved with planning what to do.Start with our school what are we doing thats good ? how can we improve?
What are we and our families doing at home? How could we make changes to improve things?
Getting a local environmentalist in to talk to the children involving the local community and spreading the word.Hi Karl
Really like your idea of a Weather and Climate team.
Its something that could include children from all classes.
Hi There
Just started the course and really enjoying it so far.Lots of practical hands on approaches which are also fun ,super important for teachers and their pupils!!Activity 1 Is it Weather or Climate
I liked how it started with the birthday memories of weather great way to suck the children in.Chat about compare and contrast summer birthdays to winter birthdays etc
Getting children to talk about weather and climate using appropriate language.Getting them to actually see they are different.I know from experience in the classroom they are often seen as the same thing.Depending on the age group I would use videos from the national geographic etc to show weather as short term and climate as years and decades.Using different climate zones in the older classes.Lots of room here for cross curricular activities.Activity 2 Weather Detectives
This activity allows for the collection and analysis of data.Very hands on lots of learning and collaboration with pupils. It can be differanciated in many ways depending on class and ages of pupils.Teaching the children how to use a thermometer getting some children to teach others this skill. It could be done for a month in the 4 different seasons. So many opportunities to analyse data. For the older classes representing data on graphs calculating averages etc
Seeing if the children could work out the best place to record temperature( not too hot or windy)…best to take temp at the same time each day….drawing their own conclusions through collaboration talk and discussion with their classmates. The use of ICT and more visual aids very beneficial.
