I think its an excellent idea to learn about climate action in our own area firstly, so we can see it for our own eyes. As you mentioned your pupils already seen it in their own area with heavy rain and flooding, great research question.
Research Question
“What are some ways we can reduce our carbon footprint at school?”
Firstly I would initiate the discussion by ‘What is carbon footprint?’. Allow the children to enter into a discussion about what the children already know about carbon footprint and why it is important and what are benefits/consequences of it being being sustainable/not being sustainable.
I would then compile a short quiz of both achievable and non achievable targets on carbon footprint.Discuss how we got on any surprises etc.Identify sources of carbon emissions in their school environment.I would then, as a class go on a carbon footprint walk to see if we notice any more e.g. lights left on, computers on. Return to class and split class in group give each group one area to come up with suggestions ideas on how to do this. Each group will have a laptop/iPads to research the topic.
Group 1 -Reduce energy consumption – lights etc.
Group 2 – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
Group 3 – Greener School Grounds
Brainstorm and propose actionable steps to reduce their carbon footprint.
Learning about their carbon footprint and taking action, even small actions, can empower children to feel like they are part of the solution and can make a difference.
Excellent list loads of detailed information there, its amazing to think all of this is happening and we are more or less oblivious to it all.
Starlink 3322, Starlink 2696, Starlink 34172, Starlink 34421,Starlink 3931 are all currently over Ireland as I type.
The main purpose of these satellites, like others in the Starlink constellation, is to provide internet access to users on Earth.
They relays internet signals between ground stations and user terminals, enabling users to connect to the internet.Other satellites that have recently been over Ireland are the International Space Station (ISS) is frequently visible from Ireland several times per week and The NOAA weather satellite.
EO Pitch –
Earth Observation means using satellites to take pictures and gather data about our planet — from space. It helps us see what’s happening on Earth in real time, across land, oceans, and the atmosphere.Earth Observation helps us protect our planet, feed our people, and prepare for the future — using technology that watches over the world, from above.
How I would explain it to my class –
Earth Observation means using satellites to take pictures and gather data about our planet from space. It is like having a view of the entire world, 24/7. With this view, we can monitor pollution and climate change, spot wildfires/floods before they happen etc.
Nose High Up in the Sky is a practical and engaging resource. I explored the pupil activities myself. They offered engaging ways to learn about observing and measuring weather conditions. The sensory activities and hands-on elements make learning meaningful and easy to access for all students. . It effectively combines Many subjects like STEM, Maths, Language and SESE in an engaging and child friendly matter. Children are encouraged to observe, ask questions, and interpret data through a variety of ways. I’m actually finding it extremely fascinating and no doubt the children will to.
I think the Teal tool is an excellent resource it allows the children to explore what might impact some areas in the future and allow to to discuss and explore what strategies or implements could be used.
I also found the worksheets a great resource allowing the children to think and discuss amongst themselves. I’m also thinking of implementing a daily record chart in my 5th class
Home is a superb way of introducing for teaching climate change because it combines fantastic visuals with an easy to understand audio description.
The children would get a clear and concise understanding of the causes and effects of climate change and we as humans have contributed to this.
Discuss on global inequality in resource consumption and the environmental impact it has and explore possible solutions including a discussion on Greta Thunberg and her eagerness to be a voice about climate change through action. As she is a very inspirational speaker and I think the other children would enjoy this video.
I think that is an excellent idea as you said her self awareness of Aspergers syndrome enables her to seek the need for action but it allows the become aware neurodivergent childrn or adults.
Activity 3 – The Paxi Video is very child friendly and it allows the teacher to gauge what the children know about what a greenhouse gas is and how it is produced, it allows a lot of room for great discussions and ideas from the children.
The Temperature prediction tool allows children to be aware of their own future climate decisions and what it could lead to discussion on how if they make a difference now, how it might change what might occur in the future.
The TEAL tool is an excellent resource which allows the children to explore is possible to explore climate variables for three different greenhouse gases from low, medium to high – interesting topic to converse on.
In my classroom I would initially install a sense of increase awareness of environmental issues and encourage the children how they could make a change. Compile a list and see what is viable for us to do within our school environment one step at a time.

I agree the Paxi video is a lovely stimulus to engage the children, lots of great ideas there Carmel very engaging for the children.
Activity 1 – STEM – Science and Maths – The ESERO Weather and Climate resource gives a wonderful suggestion of allowing children to think back to their last birthday/birthday party, its something they might easily remember or as stated might have photos from it. It’s a very engaging lesson which allows them to differentiate between weather and climate. It can be made age appropriate too depending on questioning asked , it would allow the children to collect their own weather data, identify different climatic zone etc. It highlights that weather is a short term expression and climate is a long term expression. The children learn the difference between weather and climate and also that the Earth is divided into different climate zones.
Activity 2 – Weather Detectives – STEM – Science, Maths -demonstrates responsibilities of their own learning with accurate results e.g. like not holding a thermometer too long in your hand. It allows for a lot more independent learning. In relation to a weather station as I said earlier I’d like to initiate as a whole school activity with 5th and 6th from September to October, then 3rd and 4th from November to Christmas and so on. Key members from the older classes could help and explain it to the younger groups. The results can be relayed back to all classes at our monthly assemblies to keep the interest going.
