Activity set – Rockets. For my class we would start by watching a video of a rocket launch. We would then learn about the different elements of a rocket before making our own mouse rocket. After the children have made their own mouse rocket and tested it on the same container. I would pose the question whether a different container would change their mouse rocket launch and ask for their predictions. I would then give them a variety of containers to experiment and investigate, reporting back their findings. In a subsequent lesson, the class would then work together in groups to make their own spacecraft using fizzy tablets. The class will discuss their designs and consider other objects that fly through the sky and their design.

Activity set – weather: building on from a previous lesson investigating shadows I would use the ESERO hot and cold resource. After Recapping what we had previously learnt about the sun and shadows I would ask the children how do they know the sun gives off heat to prompt an investigation into whether it is warmer in the sun or the shade. After setting up the ice cube experiment, the children would make their predictions before watching the ice cubes in the bowl in the sun and in the shade. The when is it hot or cold activity and the end of this resource is a great transition into subsequent lessons on what clothes to wear and designing a coat whether for themselves or a teddy. Which also ties in with materials.

Such a great idea Siobhan, and a great way to get parents involved in Aistear too.

Using the activity set space and aliens and the space and the mars classroom resource – design a Martian I would use the book Aliens Love Underpants as a stimulus for the lesson. While reading the story I would pause for class discussion on the illustrations of the aliens. I would ask the children to count how many eyes, fingers etc the aliens had. I would also ask the children to identify 2D shapes in the illustrations. The children would then design their own aliens using 2D shapes. In art, the class would make their alien using materials like cardboard, fabric, pipe cleaners etc connecting 2D and 3D shapes. The children would then describe their aliens and use them as a stimulus for narrative writing.

The activty set I would choose is the moon. We would start the lesson by watching a video of the moon landing. We would discuss the shape and characteristics and features of the moon. What would it be like to walk on? What would the surface feel like? The class would then role play walking on the moon based on what they observed about the moon. After which we would create a moon using the resource meet our neighbours: moon from AstroEDU. The class would create a moon using materials such as fabric and sequins to create the mountains and craters.

I love the idea of using chalk to trace their own shadows and then explore if their shadows have moved throughout the day. It is so engaging and provides a great opportunity for discovery.

What a fun and engaging lesson to put into practice what your class previously learnt about fingerprints. This is one I will be stealing for next year! Thanks for sharing.
