Space and Aliens is such a fun and engaging way to get children of all ages interested in all things ‘Space.’ I have had experience of using the book Aliens wear Underpants as a way to engage Junior Infants in the topic and I am able to use some of these techniques in my approach with ASD children. The children in my class are already fascinated with all things space so I know this book will capture the excitement fully. I would begin by brain storming with prompted questions: do you think aliens are real and if so what might they look like? I am very aware that the children in my class are very factual so I already know that the response from some of them will be that aliens do not exist. But I will encourage them to understand that scientists are continually exploring space and looking for signs of life in space. I intend to incorporate this topic and book into a maths lesson – symmetrical aliens. I will give the children half of an alien and encourage them to draw the other half (some kids need more prompts than others).
I am so aware that the children in my ASD class have different abilities so I will ensure that I keep the activity very simple by using pictures and prompts, giving clear step by step instructions which are easy to follow and I will continually be on hand to model the intended outcome at all times. Time will be given for children to complete the activity and to be able to discuss and share any ideas they may have.
I do know that this is going to be so enjoyable, children are given the creative space to come up with their own ideas. This lesson is so important because it provides opportunities for children to see that science is about having an inquiring and mind and being curious.
Overall this activity will fully engage the children and continue to encourage thiem to have an inquisitive mind.
