I would create a simple sundial with my Fourth Class by linking it to our learning in Science, Geography and Maths. First, we would discuss how the Sun appears to move across the sky and how shadows change throughout the day. The children would work in groups to design and decorate a large circular base using weatherproof materials. A sturdy stick would be placed upright in the centre. Over the course of a sunny day, we would mark the position of the shadow every hour and label each point with the correct time. The sundial would be positioned in a flat, open area of the school playground that receives sunlight for most of the day and is away from buildings or trees that could create shade. Pupils could use it throughout the year to estimate the time, observe seasonal changes and develop their understanding of the Earth’s rotation.
