        Rockets

        Introduction
Firstly I would elicit prior knowledge form the children pictures pictures form space. We would read books entitled ‘The far side of the moon’ and The way back home. Could they suggest ways to travel to space and how would we construct something like that in our classroom.
        Development
We would get ideas form Marvin and Milo who build a balloon rocket.
We would also get ideas from the Alka – Seltzer rocket experiment by Marvin and Milo.
We would endeavour to construct these rockets in smaller groups.
Materials used- balloons, bluetack, cardboard, containers for water and alka seltzer.

        Conclusion
The groups would demonstrate their findings to the class. We would discuss which ones flew better and why.

Well done Fiona. This is an excellent lesson. There are huge opportunities for cross curricular links. I like they way you introduced a quiz in order to consolidate the learning that took place.

Hands on classroom themed activities based on the weather.

            Introduction:
What type weather do we experience here in Ireland?
What is your favourite type of weather?

We will also look at measuring rainfall.

            Development:

They will be keeping a log of the rainfall over a course of a week. This will be done by providing each group with a clear container. They will put a mark at the top of the water each day and measure how much fell. The volume of rain can be measured in a clear gradiated cylinder.

They can also keep an eye on rainfall via apps such as Accuweather. The Accuweather app gives a 15 day weather forecast. This will allow the children to predict the rainfall.
There are also some excellent resources on the Met Éireann website. There are fun facts on the rain that explains how rain is made.
Conclusion: On which days was the rain the heaviest?
How do we keep a log of the weather?

            Extension activities.
            English:
            Poems based on the rain
            Art:
Paint splattering to create a picture depicting wet weather.
            Music:
Songs based on the rain-‘Raindrops keep falling on my head’

This is a lovely lesson Bridget on the weather. The children are learning but they are also having fun with the various items of clothing for different types of weather.

Activity Set: Space & Aliens. How I would use this in my classroom.

                Introduction:

Firstly I would elicit prior knowledge about aliens from the children. I would show them various images on line and play clips of aliens in space. I would then put them into smaller groups of five. Research can be completed on Chrome books via Epic and Britannica.

                English Lesson

The children are to create an alien name in the group. They would write a short story based on their alien. They would also draw what their alien would look like. A short story about the alien can be created via Book Creator. The speech to text tool may also be used to write the story.

                Extension activites

                Write a Haiku poem

                Art

Create the aliens from plasticine. The groups use the Fis film programme to create a short film based on the story.

                Gaeilge

The film could be translated into Irish

                Music

Music and sound effects can be composed for the film using percussion instruments and body percussion.

Presentation of the work to the class

Class project on the planets in the Solar System

                    Introduction:

I would elicit prior knowledge about the planets from the children. I would then play the Planet Song for the class. What are the names of the planets? What do each of the planets look like? How are they different form each other?

                    Exploration:

The class will be divided into 8 groups representing each of the planets. What would life be like on each planet. What are the dimensions and temperature of each planet.Research can be completed using I Pads via Epic and Britannica. They would also create a Learning Path so the information can be shared to the class on line.

                    Extension activities

Art- Painting of each planet created using paint sponging.

Project work displayed on A3 card and also online via a learning path.

Planet song played for the class. A child will hod up a picture of their planet when it is mentioned in the song.

A child can also hold up a picture of their planet and demonstrate the order in which  they revolve around the sun.

This is a great activity Sinead. I like they way the children are all actively involved by assigning them different roles. The use of the tennis ball and the basketball to represent the moon and the sun is a good idea.

Inquiry based lesson: Does it float or sink?

                        Introduction:

Ask the children to think about materials that float or sink in water.  We will now look at theses materials to see which ones float or sink. The children will be asked to guess what happens to the objects when placed in water.

                        Development:

The children will be divided into small groups. They will be given a basin of water and objects such as a straw, plastic bottle, pebble, ball, piece of lego, paper clip, shampoo bottle, metal spoon, plastic spoon, twig, plasticine, sheet of paper and a plastic cup.

A child will record which objects floated and which objects sank.

The children will then try to explore the idea of creating an object that will float from the materials. They will work in their groups to explore their ideas.

                        Conclusion:

They children will show their assembled objects to the class and demonstrate which ones floated most effectively.

Hi everybody. I will be a support teacher with 2nd class in September. I’m really looking forward to participating in this course. My favourite space fact is that the speed of light in space is 300,000 kilometres per second.

Thank you Liz. This is a lovely activity on ice. All the children are actively involved and they are all getting first hand experience on handling the ice. There is also a nice follow up activity on Aistear.
