Activity set : animals in the cold

I would enjoy doing this activity set with a class. I would definitely begin with the earth as a ball and the funny idea of the conversation between the penguin and the polar bear as to “who is upside down?”. I would continue with the Esero 7 worksheet download and have the poster of both animals displayed as a focus.
I would discuss how both animals adapt to the cold. i would probably pick a desert animal to compare them to.
I would read https://www.getepic.com/app/read/55309 about penguins on epic books.
I would base my art, SPHE and English lessons around these animals throughout the week.

Activity Set: The Sun and Shadows

I would love to do this topic with my class next year. I would introduce them to the idea of shadows and light using a ball and a torch.
I would then get them to go out to the yard at different times of the day and trace their partners outline. We will write the time on each shadow.
We will watch the shadows move and grow and shrink with the movement of the sun.
The children could make their own sundial over the course of a week (a sunny week of course).
The children could create a shadow puppet show for drama.

I would love to do a lesson on stars.

I would bring in a jar of sand and begin a discussion regarding how many grains of sand could possibly be in the jar.

We would discuss the vastness of space and the multitude of stars in the sky.

Development: the children would research constellations on Britannica schools and recreate a constellation of choice.

I would also integrate it with geography and history discovering how people used stars for navigational purposes. We would look into mythology throughout the world based on stars.

Great song Frances. I’ll add it to my notes for resources for next year.

    Hi All,

I teach in a Junior school in suburb in North Dublin, Next year I have 2nd class. I’m looking forward to discovering space with them next year. My favourite space fact is that there are more stars in the universe than grains of sand on Earth’s beaches.

I would love to complete an enquiry based on the silence of space. That Earth is a vacuum and if it wasn’t the sun would deafen us. I think my class would be really interested in this concept.
