I would start by using the story Aliens wear underpants as a stimulus for discussing space and aliens.

We would discuss what we know about space and aliens.

I  would ask what would an alien look like? We would draw or paint aliens, we would make our aliens using 3-d materials- clay/ construction materials/ playdough.

Then we would discuss and classify our aliens- 3 eyed aliens together, aliens with 3 heads together etc

We would then discuss the aliens home in space. We would create a small world area with constellations (stars) and the moon using concrete objects. Then we would play with our aliens in the space areas.

We would also create rockets and spaceships that we would use in the small world area.

Kate that sounds like a great lesson that the class will love. Kids always love shadows and chalk

How would you use the activity in your classroom? Post a reflective piece to the forum (150 words min) as a reply to this post. You may include digital records of the activities.

I would use the story “Can’t you sleep little bear” as a stimulus for engaging the class.

I would start by discussing the differences between night and day with the class.

What do we see at night? The moon and stars

What do we see at day? The sun

Then we would discuss the different activities we do on the day and night and create a list.

We would read the story can’t you sleep little bear and discuss why little bear had trouble sleeping.

The children would identify that little bear was afraid of the dark which comes at night time.

We would identify how Big bear tries to help little bear, Then we would discuss and name different sources of light- torch, fire, light, candle, etc.

Then we would discuss how Big bear and little bear leave the cave and see the light from the moon and stars.

We would discuss the moon and do an experiment to show how light and dark (day/night) occurs using a globe and torch.

Finally we would create pictures of the night sky over little bear and bug bear.

I will be teaching Senior infants in September and one of our aistear topics is now Space so I love teaching children about this topic.

I will use the story of  frozen to start the lesson and as a stimulus to engage the class.

Investigate materials- What is the quickest way to melt ice

Problem to solve: Elsa has frozen all of Arendelle. Can Olaf survive in summer

                  Introduction

The children will brainstorm what they know about ice.

They will discuss the different between hot and cold things/ climates

                  Development

We will complete Magic Olaf melting ice cube experiments. The children will be asked to predict which Olaf ice cube will melt first. We will have the Olaf ice cubes in different situations 1. warm water 2. wrapped in different materials.

The children will watch and observe what melts first.

                  Photo story

Children create photo stories of Olafs life in summer.
