I think that having local people and knowledge of traditions like fishing in your area make great learning for children. It links so many subjects Geog History Science report oral langiage skills project work. Usomg technology could be a hige help to this to make videos and record info

        Hi everyone

My name is Marie. I have junior infants in September. I have worked on the topic if Space with older classes with more factual and detailed lessons on pla etc. For Sept I that I can learn from this course hoe to explore the topic in a more child friendly and play centre way. I think it has been suggested that using it as a Aistear topic is a good way to allow children to evoke an interest and explore the topic in an age appropriate way.

Using books and stories on topic and adding them to library area or role play area can be a trigger for younger children. They engage with books on topic and become curious about the theme we are exploring.

The lesson I would look at changing matter

Trigger: Picture cards with melted ice cream chocolate and melted snow.

Inquiry: What’s happened here? How did the items melt? If we need to melt chocolate how would we change it?

Explore :Discuss with children how to make changes from solid to liquid. We heat ice or choc. This can also be demonstrated. Allow children children hold ice and.choc and see how great can change.

Talk about changes that take place.

Investigate: pose question can we make things solid again

How would we make this happen?

If we make water cold it will freeze?

What happens to water in a kettle?

        Sharing

Allow children to use sequence cards to discuss and place in order what happens

encourage children to use language liquid solid gas melt freeze

        The next step

A good idea and great way to engage kids is jelly. Melt the solid cubes to liquid and then let it set back to solid.

        Here’s my mind Map x

From the activities outlined in this module i would choose the Sun and shadows lessons.

For September I will be teaching Junior Infants.

This topic leds itself to teacher demostration and visual cues how the sun and earth make day and night.

The activities showed in My night sky are very child friendly and outline the lesson ideas clearly.

A nice way to demonstrate how the earth rotates causing difference shadows would be to pair the class up and get the children to stand and the other outline the shadow that it casts. This activity can then be repeated in the afternoon from the exact same spot. the shadow outline or shape should have changed indicating how the earth moves and rotates.

              Hi My name is Marie

I will have Junior Infants in Sept. Youtube resources are great to show young children and help them imagine and question.

I think a great topic would be life as an astronaut and becasue of toung ag use interview and video to record question and answer session.

children could dress up and make role play area
