The videos were great and are very suitable and interesting for school aged children. There were very informative and provided information on the nutritional benifets of oysters, mussels and salmon. This provides a introduction for the food pyramid and allowing for discussion on the foods we eat . Children are very aware of the foods we sould have limited amounts of but can the talk about foods we should have and why .  This video shows that salmon is important for brain development and how the other seafoods ae rich in  selenium and other minerals and vitamins which are needed for our healthy development. It tells us that there is more protein in salmon than in beef …something I didnt know . The story about the Salmon of Knowledge is one that the children know but combining the story, the video about Fionn Mc Cumhaill and the video about the importance of salmon in the diet provides a super educational  where one could look at the stem policy and address it through these resources .

A very impressive start to this course , aleady I am delighted to have chosen it. Teaching in Meath a big agricultural area I never paid much attention to aquaculture but now I know Ican bring it to the kids doorstep through those four super educational videos . I spend a lot of time in Inishowen and ofen pass the mussel farms on Lough Foyle and along the coastline from Malin town . I never gave much thought to what went on and perhaps seen it as a past time . Now I am informed and super interested . Even the nutritional facts and we all moan about lack of sunshine for Vit  D, but there it is big time in salmom. Also a new life cycle to study .All this going on and only helping our environment . I information of the farming of oysters, mussels and salmon videos are great and will be of great use in the class, I eevn have applied for the ARc visit . Fingers crossed!

Consider how many Songs / Poems /Art can you think of to connect us with the Night Sky?

There a numerous songs ,poems and art suggestions that you could use to connect children with the night sky .As a trigger  you could let the children listen to a song that may give them suggestions for visual representionsof the sky at night . The children would listen to short parts of perhaps 6 songs and on one piece f paper draw what comes to their mind.

              Examples of songs could include

              ·  Twinkle Twinkle Little star.

How you would engage your learners to explore biodiversity in yoHow you would engage your learners to explore biodiversity in your local area and the possible impacts of light pollution on local biodiversity?
Firstly I would show the children photographs of the local area buildings ,grassy areas , stream , wildflower areas and ask them what they see. This will act as a trigger engage the children in conversation about their local area . I would then show them a video perhaps David Attenborough’s on biodiversity to give the children more language on the area.
I could then give them a simple map of the area and working together on the IWB show what is in the area using a key. Perhaps numbers and then written what each number stands for .Kids could then using a new map and clipboard go outside and do the map from first hand information , This work could be conducted in small groups.
We will keep these maps when complete .The nest step would be to divide into groups and go to certain areas e. old stone wall, rockery etc and using ipads record the insects they see by taking photographs .
We could then discuss biodiversity and what it means and what we seen in our local area.
We look at th stone wall in two different places one in dark corner and the second section where a security light shines .Is there a difference in the number and types of insects found in each area .
This leads on to light pollution and how it affects plant and animal life .
We could finish off with the following ‘Can you see the stars tonight ‘ by Anna Terreros where the Pufflings get lost and can’t find their way because artificial light confuses them. I will explain that too much light at night confuses some animals

Detail how light pollution is impacting your local area and how you would engage your learners to explore this.

Over the last 25 years  have seen a huge change in my local envirnoment at night.Living in Co, Meath just 15 miles from Dublin the countryside has changed so much especially at night . There is a costant glow in the sky every night and despite living ina very rural area I can say there is never complete darkness. The national roads have traffic all night will very little quiet time ,the towns and villages and even crossroads have street lighting from dusk to dawn . Residential houses all have outside lighting when dark rather than sensor activated lighting. Traffic on small country roads blind animals and often lead to road kill.

I think you could draw the children’s attention to places in Ireland that are Dark Sky places and ask them what we as individuals can do to lower light pollution . Start with thier homes and the classroom .Ask are we using all the natural light we can and if not what could we do to improve this . Classrooms may have vertical blinds should we open them? Experiment with light bulbs to see which give glaring lights . Use some of the photos in the slides eg, the outside lights with soft and glare lighting .Discuss the insects being attracted . Set a task to record  if at home there are lights being left on.

Have classroom discussions on light pollution and how it is changing our environment ,not being able to see the Milky Way in parts of the country and explain why not. All this will help engage children in change.

Just drawing attention to light pollution will make people think and prehaps children will try to influence or as questions of adult behaviour towarda light pollution .

:@ Plan to observe the moon on a September morning
To introduce the topic i would have a brain instorming activity to see wat the children already knew or thought about the moon and then I would Show them the video ‘Paxi and the moon, phases and eclipses video’ as a jumping off point. We would then discuss the terminology around the phases of the moon . I would use this opportunity to introduce new novel vocabulary to the children’s scientific literacy. Phrases like waning, waxing, gibbous and crescent as well as new moon, quarter and full moon help to understand and communicate the concepts they are learning. A discussion about the video and what they got from it should follow .They may need to watch again,
A discussion on where the moon is and is it visible at the moment .Is the moon always there and if so can we see it all the time ,if not why not.
During the fourth week in September we would go outside each morning to look at the sky .Hopefully on the 24th Sept at 10.30 am approx the moon would be high in the south western sky. I would ask the children to describe what they see and record for later use in the class.
After this we would return to the class and, using i pads and the web version of Stellarium, we would explore how the moon phases will change over the coming days, weeks and months. Giving the children time to play and explore the app.. Artworks, descriptive writing and other activities could be developed from the lesson.

The 30 Day and Night lesson is a great one for infants . As a trigger for this lesson I would use the beautiful photographs of the animals to engage the children in a discussion about animals that come out at night. Terminology nocturnal and diurnal c.an be introduced. You would ask the kids to look carefully at their features and come to some conclusions about why owl might have big eyes or what helps bats cat prey when their eyesight is so bad.You can then move onto Day and Night in the world and the colouring and cutting activity Children in the World. Having one completed to show the children would be benificial. This is a good visual representation of night and day on opposite sides of the world.

Proceed to cutting out the day and night and placing it over the children of the world . This can be used to explain and show when it is light in one part it may be dark in another pats of the world.Proceed to the final part of the lesson where an orange represents the worls and  identify Europe and Australia . Using a torch as the sun in a darkened room you are able to show day and night in different hemispheres. You can follow up with a discussion on relatives and friends living throughout the world and if they could telephone them at any time of our day .
