      Hi Tara,

It was interesting to read of your own experience of viewing the night sky in the U.S. and how this contrasts with the night skies you now see in Dublin. Good luck with your project with your students.

I would use the globe at night is citizen science program was my 4th class in the following way. The program is available 10 days in any month. I would use the program in January or November when the sky is dark early in the evening. Preparation for the program the class would study constellations within the classroom Andrews star charts to determine which is the best constellation to use for their area for that particular month. 4 the 10 days of observation and recording I would assign this as a homework activity replacing the traditional homework assignments the class are given. I would provide students with charts to complete during the evening observations. Each day the students can present their observations using these charts and information can be uploaded to the website using class laptops in this way the students will be sharing their observations and this allows for all students to participate even those who do not have access to a device at home.

          Hi Lora,

Those are excellent suggestions for helping the students to get the most from using the Stellarium. I am sure you students will really enjoy exploring space with this resource.

I thought the Worldwide Telescope was an excellent resource to use in the classroom. I would use it in September to study the seasons. September is an excellent time to study seasons as we move from summer into autumn. The worldwide telescope website has a  set of lessons specific to the study of the seasons. The lessons cover the earth’s motion around the sun the earth’s tilt the tilts relationship to the seasons and energy transfer from the sun to earth.
Using a class set of laptops along with the Interactive Whiteboard in the classroom I would use a combination of whole class lesson and small group work to investigate the seasonal move from summer to autumn using the videos and worksheets available on the worldwide telescope website.

                Hi Claire,

I enjoyed reading your plan to observe the sun at different times of the day.

The plan was very detailed and I will use it to teach the same lesson to my 4tth Class next year.

I enjoyed reading about your plan to construct a sundial with your 6th Class. I think it is an excellent project to maximise cross curricular study. The biggest benefit, however, is the opportunity to get out of the classroom and make use of the outdoor learning environment.

I would divide the students into small groups of two or three students per group. Each group would be given a planet to research online. The focus of the research would be to find the gravitational pull of each planet and also to investigate the appearance of the planet. Using the information they have found the students could predict whether an object would be heavier or lighter on the planet than it is on earth. The information they find about the planet’s appearance will be used when they come to decorate their tube.
I would demonstrate what a gravitational tube looks like by showing them the one for earth which I would have prepared earlier. Then using the information on the table given in the online presentation and providing the students with the equipment and resources they need the students would make the gravitational tube for their planet.
On completion of their gravitational tubes the students can share what they have produced with other groups in the class and a class display can be made.
