Great lesson Brona – I like the addition of mirrors and translucent items, and the tracing art activity sounds like it would be very engaging for the children.
Ailbhe, your class universe display sounds lovely- I like the idea of it showcasing many different star types.
Sounds like a tasty lesson Ailbhe! What would you do to heat the chocolate?
Great idea to have the children try out every bottle in turn, this is nice and fair, and gives the children more of an opportunity to experiment. It would be interesting to see if they all mostly agree on the best bottle launcher.
I really like the testable element you have added to this lesson with the jam jars, that’s a really nice addition.
Lovely lesson Jeanne, you describe the language you would talk to the children with around this so well and your emphasis on a fair test is great.
Great lesson Eimear, this sounds like a very fun and engaging experiment. How you tied it into carbonates on Mars is very nice. Would you have the space rock samples prepared in advance to make it more challenging, or is that part of the task?
Interesting anecdote Catriona! It’s so easy to incorporate science into activities with kids because science is all about wonder, imagination, creativity and thinking – all of which children are excellent at.
Hi Catriona, it’s lovely to hear the children in your summer program enjoyed the rocket activity so much. It’s such a stimulating lesson!
Great description of how you could implement SSE in your school. It is so important for teachers to collaborate for SSE to be effective.
Good lesson Belinda. I like how you revisit the think, pair, share chart to add your new knowledge – this can really help reinforce learning.
Good work incorporating different areas of the curriculum into this lesson. I do like your planting activity, but just to note there is light in space. For example, sunlight hits the Moon and Mars just like it does on Earth. The reason we cannot grow things on the Moon is because it has a very thin atmosphere and therefore no oxygen or water. You could try not watering one of your plants instead, or leaving one in an airtight container.
I really like this lesson Ailbhe, good implementation of the inquiry framework. I can imagine the children being very excited and surprised by your prompt.
Nice lesson Ailbhe – the follow on art activity you mention could be interesting for seeing their understanding and perspective of space. What did you mean by ‘logitech shapes’? I’m not sure what that is.
Great work Sarah! Aliens are a very stimulating topic for children but I think it’s important to keep a lesson on aliens as scientific as you can. Incorporating where the aliens live in to what they look like is so great for this, and I really like your addition of sorting the aliens they create into families.
